Club Career
Califf began his soccer career at the University of Maryland. With the Terrapins, he started both years and was named a third-team All American He left after his sophomore season to join the MLS.
The Galaxy were the team that took a shot with Califf, and they weren't disappointed. He had almost an immediate impact as a rookie, helping the Galaxy end a four-game winless streak with a 39th minute goal against Tampa Bay.
Califf was later voted by the local media as defender of the year and was a Rookie of the Year finalist. The California native stayed with the Galaxy for five years, with his final season in Los Angeles plagued with injuries. The highlight while playing for the Galaxy came in 2001, which included a game winning goal in the Lamar Hunt Open Cup final and helping the Galaxy win their first MLS Cup.
The San Jose Earthquakes acquired the defender from their arch rivals in 2005, and he rewarded their fans with a tremendous season. He anchored one of the best defenses the MLS has seen, and they only lost four games all season.
Califf became a better defender because he was improved his reading of the game and positioning. As a result, he was a finalist for Defender of the Year, and was named to the MLS Best XI.
After the 2005 season, Califf signed with Aalborg BK (AaB) of the Danish League. Said the defender: "I have had a wonderful six years in MLS, but this is a new chapter in my career. I am looking to go to Europe, make an impression, and enjoy what I expect to be a tremendous experience, both professionally and personally."
Califf would go on to spend three years with Aalborg helping the northern Danish squad qualify for the Intertoto Cup after his first season where he started 30 games.
The Californian would also notch his first SuperLiga goal against Odense in that same season.
After the 2008 season, Califf and Aalborg could not come to terms on a new contract so the defender switched over to rivals Midtjylland.
International Career
Califf's international career predates his MLS time as he played extensively for US youth National Teams. In 1997, he was named as player of the match in a narrow Under-17 World Championships loss to Brazil.
After two productive years with the Under-20's, he was promoted in 2000 to the Under-23 National Team and took home a Pan-Am games bronze medal in 1999.
Califf then participated in the Sydney Olympics, where the Americans finished fourth. Danny continued to play well and earned his first senior cap against South Korea in the 2002 Gold Cup.
In 2003 he played significant minutes at both the Confederations and Gold Cups. In 2004, Califf scored his first international goal in a tie against Haiti.
He was involved in a World Cup 2006 qualifying match against Panama, going the full 90 in a game which the US won 2-0.
Califf also had the honor of being part of the 2007 national team that competed at the 2007 Copa America. Califf served as captain for the squad in the third and final match against Colombia. The U.S. lost all three matches in group play.
