After leading his squad, the Seattle Sounders, to two A-League Championships, Hahnemann began his top-flight career in February 1997 with the Colorado Rapids. Despite a dismal regular season record, he aided his team in a Cinderella-like run for the MLS Cup, where they finished second to the reigning champions DC United.
In 1998, Hahnemann set the Rapids record for the most games and minutes played in a single season by a goalkeeper, playing 2,520 minutes in 28 games and compiling a 16-12 record, and was named Colorado's Defender of the Year.
Hahnemann made the leap from American to European soccer by signing with Fulham in 1999, where he didn't see much playing time in his three years there. This made it possible to loan him first to Reading and then to Rochdale during the 2001/02 season.
These loans not only got him playing time but also some exposure, and Reading was so impressed that they were eager to have him rejoin the team and signed him to a two-year deal in 2002. That season, one that nearly took the Royals to the Premiership, Hahnemann started 46 games and enjoyed a 7-game shutout streak.
Hahnemann picked up a knee injury late in the 2003/04 season, but returned to help his team close out the year. Hahnemann was ever present in Reading's spectacular 2005/06 Championship title winning season, which included a 33 game unbeaten streak and is due to make his Premiership debut with the Royals in August 2006.
Always a fan favorite at Madejski Stadium, he will normally throw an empty drink bottle into the crowd and has also distributed shirts and gloves after either an exceptionally good or an exceptionally bad performance.
International Career
Hahnemann earned his first cap back in 1994 against Trinidad and Tobago and his first international shutout that same year against Jamaica.
He was again selected for the national team in 2003, along with Tim Howard (then with Manchester United), where he notched 45 minutes of playing time and allowed one goal in a 2-1 victory against New Zealand.
His World Cup qualifying debut came in September 2005 in the 0-0 draw away to Guatemala. Hahnemann was selected to Bruce Arena's 2006 World Cup squad, but made way for veteran Kasey Keller during all of the US matches in Germany.
