RECAP: WEEKEND FINNISH ACTION
Bri-Mathias Hodge - Monday, July 26, 2010
FC Inter and Daniel Antunez got a win before their start of Europa League action while Greg Eckhardt and VPS had a night to forget as the Veikkausliiga marches on.

FC Inter 2 - 0 FF Jaro

Inter downed the visitors from Jakobstad on Sunday thanks to a strong second half performance from Kennedy Nwanganga.

Daniel Antunez started and went the distance for the hosts at Veritas Stadium.

Nwanganga first set up teammate Henri Lehtonen in the 67th minute before grabbing a goal of his own in stoppage time, making a 50 yard run and slotting it by Jaro's Estonian keeper Vitali Teleš into the bottom right corner to seal the victory.

Inter will take the momentum from the victory into the Europa League third qualifying round first leg tilt against KRC Genk scheduled for Thursday night in Turku.

With the win Inter vault up the standings to sixth place, even on points with Jaro and VPS.

VPS 1 - 4 IFK Mariehamn

It was a long night for the Vaasa defense as they were hammered at home by the Swedish speaking strugglers from the autonomous province of Åland on Monday evening.

Greg Eckhardt started and went 64 minutes in defense before being replaced by Tero Koskela.

Tamás Gruborovics opened the scoring for the guests in the tenth minute, hitting a 40 yard bomb on the half volley that surprised VPS keeper Kwon Jung-Hyuk.

Gruborovics doubled the lead just two minutes later with a near post glancing header off of a Sebastian Strandvall corner.

Sasha Anttilainen put the hosts three in front just before the half time whistle when he followed his own rebound off of a blocked shot and beat Kwon to the near post from a tight angle.

Mikko Paatelainen scored the visitors fourth in the 72nd minute, flicking on an Ante Simunac free kick from close range.

Artu Seppälä salvaged something for the hosts nine minutes from time knocking it in from close range after a scramble in the box.

Goalkeeper Brian Pope remains out for VPS with a shoulder injury.

The loss leaves VPS in seventh place in the Veikkausliiga standings, with just over half the games gone. Mariehamn move up to 11th place with the win.
