The dynamic American duo of DaMarcus Beasley and Maurice Edu can help Rangers earn the first of three trophies this season when they take on St. Mirren in the final of the Scottish League Cup on Sunday at Hampden Park in Glasgow.
It is still uncertain if one of the US internationals will be part of head coach Walter Smith's starting 11. Kris Boyd and Kenny Miller are likely starters up front and a pairing with wingers Beasley and Nacho Novo would give Smith a lineup with plenty of offensive firepower.
Meanwhile Old Firm hero Edu will likely start on the bench but will be one of the first options to shore up the defensive midfield should Rangers sport a lead in the second half.
The road to the final has been a fairly seamless one for the Light Blues who strung together two road wins versus Dundee and Queen of the South, both first division teams, before putting away Scottish Premier League club St. Johnstone in the semifinal last November.
Now another date with St. Mirren awaits Rangers which will be the sixth time this year that the two clubs have faced each other.
The previous five instances resulted in four wins for the Glasgow club with only a goalless draw in a fifth round Scottish Cup match being the only instance when the Saints kept Edu, Beasley and company at bay.
Rangers have won this tournament a record 25 times and will look to reclaim the title of cup holders after last season's bitterly disappointing 2-0 final loss to Celtic in extra time.
St. Mirren head coach Gus McPherson will be without Chris Innes who is sidelined with an injury while hamstring injuries will leave defenders Kirk Broadfoot and Madjid Bougherra off the gameday roster. |
