It is back to business in the Scottish Premier League for DaMarcus Beasley, Maurice Edu and the rest of the Rangers squad who welcome in St. Mirren on Saturday at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow.
Edu played the role of hero last week for Rangers when he scored in the waning seconds to lift the Light Blues to victory over Old Firm rivals Celtic.
The Californian had come on as a first half substitute for Lee McCulloch who was forced to leave the match due to an ankle injury.
McCulloch is expected to miss another week of action so Edu is likely to get the starting nod from head coach Walter Smith against the Buddies.
Beasley did not factor in last Sunday's dramatic victory but his play on Wednesday for the US national team versus Holland may certainly give Smith a reason to include the Indiana native in his starting 11 on Saturday.
The winger assisted in the US' only goal when his free kick found an unmarked Carlos Bocanegra in the 88th minute to put the US on the scoreboard in the 2-1 loss.
Rangers are boasting of confidence in light of the win against the Hoops and have all but wrapped up another SPL title thanks to Edu's game-winner.
The Light Blues are sporting a very comfortable 10 point lead over Celtic and still have a match in hand versus lowly St. Johnstone. There are 11 matches remaining in the SPL season and only a monumental collapse by the defending league and cup champions would jeopardize their 53rd league crown.
Saturday's visitors have actually shown well versus Smith's squad this season. Gus McPherson saw his team push Rangers to the limit in a February 17th fifth round Scottish Cup replay match only to see a late Kris Boyd goal foil any chance of an upset.
St. Mirren's league play has been poor however as their winless streak now rests at eight. They are in 10th place in the SPL standings and just three points ahead of last place Falkirk in the relegation zone.
Apart from McCulloch, defender Madjid Bougherra is questionable due to a hamstring injury while St. Mirren will be without Jack Ross who has ankle ligament damage and Chris Innes who is plagued with a calf injury. |
