RECAP: RANGERS 3 - 0 ST. JOHNSTONE
Arch Bell - Sunday, December 13, 2009
DaMarcus Beasley may have earned himself a call from Bob Bradley after his exceptional effort on Saturday for Rangers who downed St. Johnstone at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow.

Beasley started at midfielder for head coach Walter Smith and went the first 73 minutes before yielding his spot to 17 year old John Fleck. Beasley would end up tallying an assist in the effort.

It was the second match in a row which featured a start for Beasley who has found his way back into Smith's regular rotation after publicly stating that he would like to move away from the club during the winter transfer period.

Fellow American Maurice Edu did not take part in Saturday's action as he continues his recovery from knee surgery.

The Light Blues began the match with an early goal, a characteristic they often showed last season in their home stretch towards the Scottish Premier League title.

Kris Boyd continued his torrid stretch by putting the hosts on the scoreboard first, but it was all made possible by the play of Beasley who fed Boyd with a pass at the edge of the box giving the striker an open look at goal which he struck for the first minute goal.

The Indiana native continued to exhibit stellar play as he pressed the St. Johnstone's defense into errors and helped Rangers earn several first half set pieces and corner kicks.

Boyd doubled the margin in the 27th minute by scoring off a penalty kick after Nacho Novo was brought down in the penalty area by the Saints goalkeeper.

It was the second consecutive match that the Scottish international scored two goals in a match. Boyd now has 16 goals on the season.

The halftime break did nothing to slow Gers and Beasley who continued pushing for another goal. The former PSV Eindhoven man was all over the right side of the field leaving the St. Johnstone's defense in his wake.

In the 51st minute Beasley swung a cross over to Kenny Miller whose shot on goal was blocked only to see Novo sweep in and poke home the rebound.

Beasley nearly notched his first goal on the campaign with a curling left footed shot from inside the box that was barely tipped away by the visiting goalkeeper. It proved to be the winger's last real opportunity at goal as he was substituted off shortly thereafter.

The victory keeps Rangers just a single point behind Celtic for the top spot in the SPL with a midweek visit up next on Tuesday versus Dundee United.

Dude...all I can say to your comments is, your statements appear personal. Did he do something to you that causes you to disregard the hard work and chances he has taken by going to Europe, playing in the CL, etc., getting injured, fighting through poor form and people writing him off then STILL playing well! Just look at his last 3 games.

Beas is back!

No player is more polarizing in our national team talks than Damarcus. My greatest denunciation does not concern the player he can be when his confidence is at its peak. The sad fact is he is an inconsistent performer; he'll be on fire for a few months, then look like a timid old man at the worst possible time (see WC 2006 and Confed Cup). That he is regaining form slowly doesn't mean that he's going to be a regular again, it means that he could well be a loser come South Africa, and we will need to shove in a replacement (Convey in 2006). I feel no loyalty toward him because he has failed this team at crucial times, and no sympathy because he has abused trust without fail.

You don't lose your skill, you lose your confidence, which is what has happened in his case. All he needs is a coach to show confidence in him and he will gain his confidence back. Maybe he has lost a step but he still can fly down the left side and still has great vision on the ball. Give him minutes and he will re-emerge as a threat for the US.

Pretty strong appraisal of Beasley's skill. For me, he is too young to write off. As far as the US is concerned, who is better on the left?

he's not good enough anymore! why do people insist on using the players that had lost they're talent, and who are not on there prime anymore. we need younger and more talented players people get over him already!

Wait a minute!! How soon we tend to forget that Beasely had a devastating knee injury and has lacked consistent playing time since (simular to Edu and many others). Why are we trying to write off a mainstay in the USMNT program since he was a teenager at 27?

Give the guy a chance to work his way back to full match fitness and with Walter Smith giving him a chance to prove his quality with PT, "The Beas" will be back.

Unless Beasley has SEVERAL more like this match, he has yet to deserve anything like a recall to the National team... I'm much more interested in Maurice Edu's condition, as we have a real NEED for his services come next spring.

This had better NOT earn Beasley a call up. This had better get him in the shop window for a move to league with decent quality across the board. He shredded the St. Johnstone defense... yipee. Glad to see him get some starts and with it some confidence, and with luck, weekly duties elsewhere.
