RECAP: WEEKEND FRENCH ACTION Rich Fidler - Sunday, November 1, 2009
Rennes hosted Valenciennes on Sunday afternoon and the visitors made the most of their visit thanks to three goals in the second half, while Sochaux was on the losing end of a game against Paris Saint-Germain.
Rennes 0-3 Valenciennes
Rennes was unable too match last weekend's spectacular victory and was throttled by Valenciennes at home.
American Carlos Bocanegra started at left back and went the full 90 minutes in the loss, picking up a yellow card in the 56th minute for his efforts.
The first goal of the game would come in the 58th minute when recent signing Dianbobo Balde scored. Midfielder Fahid Ben Khalfallah's free-kick found the defender and he powerfully headed past Nicolas Douchez from the edge of the six-yard box.
Khalfallah would score his own in spectacular fashion just 20 minutes later. The Tunisian would dribble past Bocanegra and Bruno Cheyrou, sending in a vicious left-footed blast just out of the reach of the Rennes 'keeper from the edge of the penalty area.
Just four minutes from the final whistle the visitors would pick up a final goal in controversial fashion. Grégory Pujol would sprint past Bocanegra and slammed a shot off the crossbar.
The 29-year old's shot would smack immediately down on the goalline and back in to the woodwork again but to the shock of Douchez official Pascal Vileo awarded a goal to the Frenchman.
Rennes will hope to rebound as they travel to face Toulouse next Sunday.
Notes
Sochaux fell 4-1 to Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday afternoon without American striker Charlie Davies.
