Ryan Guy scored the winning goal for St. Patrick's Athletic against Drogheda United in what was a must-win game for The Super Saints.
Drogheda United 1-2 St. Patrick's Athletic
Guy proved yet again why he is such a firm favorite with the St. Pat's supporters after his 54th minute strike earned his team a valuable win.
With the threat of relegation looming large for last season's runners-up in the Premier Division, this game offered Pete Mahon's team a chance to boost their chances of staying up.
However, they got off to the worst possible start when James Chambers converted a Brendan McGill cross to put the hosts in front on just six minutes.
St. Pat's responded well to that goal with midfielder Stuart Byrne coming close on three occasions to getting the Dublin club back into the game.
When their goal finally came, it was a huge relief for the away team as Declan O'Brien rose highest in the box to score against the club where he made his name in League of Ireland soccer.
Guy then complimented that goal with a superb finish of his own that rocketed into the top corner after O'Brien had set up the chance for him.
Late on in the game Guy was involved in a confrontation with Chambers, which resulted in the Drogheda midfielder being sent off.
Notes
Chris Konopka remained on the bench as Sporting Fingal beat Mervue United 4-1. |
