PREVIEW: WEEKEND IRISH ACTION
Gareth Maher - Thursday, October 15, 2009
St. Patrick's Athletic will be aiming to beat bottom placed club Bray Wanderers on Friday and Ryan Guy could play a key role, while Chris Konopka will be hoping for some game time with Sporting Fingal.

St. Patrick's Athletic - Bray Wanderers

After slipping to third from bottom of the Premier Division, St. Pat's need to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible as the threat of relegation looms large.

A win at Richmond Park would move them onto 37 points, although head coach Pete Mahon knows that his team have to make improvements if they are to move back up the table.

Midfielder Stuart Byrne is unavailable due to suspension and Noel Haverty is still struggling with a hamstring injury. There is a hope of defender Jason Gavin featuring despite struggling to prove his fitness.

Guy may be a crucial player for The Super Saints in the remaining five games of the season as his contributions in attack have been one of the most consistent things in a largely inconsistent year for the Dublin club.

Bray stunned Cork City last week by storming back to claim a 3-2 victory, but this game will be a lot tougher if they are missing four players who are struggling to shake off injuries.

Dave Webster, Derek Foran, Gary McCabe, and Paul Byrne - all regular starters - are rated doubtful for a game that they really must win in order to keep their slim survival hopes alive.

Longford Town - Sporting Fingal

With the season entering its final stretch, Sporting are fully aware that their promotion hopes are not looking great as they trail First Division leaders UCD by five points.

If Liam Buckley's can win this game and both Shelbourne and UCD slip up in their games, then they will inch closer to that top spot.

With Robert Bayly and Brian Gannon both suspended, they will not have a full squad to choose from. There could be changes in the starting eleven and Konopka will be standing by to take over the number one jersey if the manager opts to switch goalkeepers.

Longford will miss the suspended Brian McCarthy and the absence of the big centre-back could have a big influence in this game as Gareth Cronin's team attempt to use their home advantage against a promotion-chasing team.
