GOOCH OUT OF ACTION FOR 3-4 MONTHS
Brent Latham - Wednesday, October 14, 2009
The United States paid handsomely for the last gasp tie secured Wednesday night at RFK, as central defender Oguchi Onyewu damaged ligaments in his knee and will be out of action three to four months.

The large defender injured himself when his left leg slipped on the wet turf as he went up for a ball in the Costa Rican area. Onyewu immediately plunged to the ground and called for assistance. He was stretchered off the field and the US was forced to finish the match, which they tied in the last minute of extra time, with ten men.

The diagnosis confirmed by US Soccer after the match was a torn left patellar tendon. The prognosis for recovery from such an injury is at least three months.

If Gooch recovers on schedule and without complications, he would return to action sometime in the spring, perhaps by February or early March, which in theory would give the defender ample time to regain game fitness before the World Cup, which begins in early June.

The AC Milan defender has appeared only occasionally for the Serie A club, and his status in the face of a pending personnel sweep at San Siro will not be helped by this injury, which threatens to rob him of the bulk of the club season.

looks like gooch will be back in plenty of time for WC. however my concern is after he comes back he wont be getting any playing time. if he wasn't playing before the injury chances are he wont be in the lineup immediately when he comes back. Any chance AC would loan him out for the spring season once he is healthy?

Gooch has a humongous heart...too big sometimes, apparent at the last wc. He''ll be back and do just fine. The real concern is sustained team emotion and team desire. If we have to fight from behind with the BIG DOGS---again--wow....poor us. This team needs to work on knocking in a fast onion bagger. Last minute heroics, although esteemable, won't work in the DANCE.

Upcoming friendlies can provide opportunities to identify other and new talent, as well as experimenting with different player combinations/chemistry.

Charles Kazlauskas is a solid player with good all around skills who has been consistently playing well professionally in the Netherlands since he was a teenager. He appears to be more suited to an outside full back position, but is capable of manning up inside. Now 26, he merits and is worthy of consideration for the USMNT.

All the best meanwhile to our injured players. Godspeed for full recoveries for each of them.

A patellar tear is not a big deal. He will recover fine and a better lower body weight training regimens with stretching should do the trick. Why do I think his training regimen in Italy has changed and his body hasn't adjusted appropriately? Just wondering.

The problem is match fitness which most people always assume is physical, but has a strong mental component. Even regular high intensity training sessions of 2 hours don't replicate what happens in a game with high risk attackers making diagonal runs behind your back.

I like the idea of a 3-5-2, unfortunately though we honestly don't have the worlds fastest defenders. We do have smart and tough defenders not only in the air but on ground. But world teams have faster fowards then our backs, and one less back will get us burned more often. My opinion is if any plans for 3 in the back, the push to a 3-4-3. We need an attacking power. God help us all if we have to watch another world cup with starting one forward. Get well Gooch and Davies!

I think it's time for Bradley to at least experiment with a 3-5-2. With the lack of a standout left back, and the injuries to Demerit and now Gooch the defense is looking pretty thin. While D-mid seems to be the deepest position in the player pool right now. Not to mention that it might help the US maintain a little more possession in midfield. It seems like a no brainer to me.
Get well soon Gooch, Davies, Demerit, Edu and Jones.
Wow, that's becoming a long list.

Its time for Bob to do some serious rock turning and experimenting. NO doubt this situation with injuries if tough, but it also presents opportunities to try new things. Hopefully upcoming friendlies will provide some answers. Sometimes gray clouds have silver linings.

This is turning into a made for TV movie. We are SCREWED. Demerit and Gooch were the best we had. Yes, I remember Boca.

Time to get Cory Gibbs back into the team. Remember him?!?! A long-term injury while at Charlton Athletic (and just before the last World Cup) hurt him desperately. I'm not an MLS fan so cannot vouch for him now or how he's been playing for Colorado, but I'd give him another shot.

Can anybody out there give their assessment of Gibbs?
