RECAP: WEEKEND SWEDISH ACTION Jon Van Wagenen - Monday, September 28, 2009
The autumn winds in western Götaland obviously favored the home teams, as Ryan Miller and Etchu Tabe enjoyed a decisive win for Ljungskile, while Alejandro Bedoya's Örebro was downed by GAIS.
GAIS 3 – 0 Örebro
Alejandro Bedoya was a second half sub, but could not turn the tide as GAIS dominated Örebro in Göteborg.
The hosts got the scoring started in the ninth minute when Eyjolfur Hedinsson crossed from the left wing to Pär Ericsson who headed in the near top corner.
Bedoya replaced Markus Astvald eight minutes into the second half. Ten minutes later Mattias Lindström disposessed the Örebro backline and found Brazilian high-scorer Wanderson do Carmo who slotted it in top right.
Bedoya had a chance in the 82nd minute, taking a low cross from fellow sub Robin Staf, but shooting down the middle, he did not trouble GAIS keeper Dime Jankulovski.
Wanderson punctuated the match in the same minute. The striker controlled a bouncing lob with his chest. His second touch crossed up defender Michael Almebäck and allowed him just enough space to shoot to the left of the keeper from about 15 meters.
The loss leaves Örebro five points out of Sweden's final Europa League spot with five matches remaining. GAIS now sit in tenth place as they prepare to face hometown rivals IFK Göteborg October fifth. Örebro is back in action on the fourth, when they host Malmö.
Ljungskile SK 3 – 0 Falkenbergs FF
Ryan Miller and Etchu Tabe both started in defense as Ljungskile made it three straight victories at a crucial point in the season.
The drubbing of Falkenbergs FF in front of over 1000 fans gave the home team some insulation from the bottom of the table.
Miller was given an assist on the first goal as his cross was touched on by Johan Patrikson who found Daniel Åkervall in open space 20 minutes in. Åkervall knocked it in off the post.
Niklas Löfgren scored 16 minutes later with a hard shot that Stojan Lukic could not get a hold of.
Löfgren struck again at the 68th minute after Johan Patriksson beat his defender and raced down the field to swing one to the striker, who this time used his head to end all doubt.
Tabe played all 90 minutes, despite picking up an early yellow card, while Miller was rewarded for a fine outing with a substitution three minutes before full time.
The western Swedish club travels to IFK Norrköping FK October 5th. Falkenberg will take on Landskrona BoIS on the 8th.
