RECAP: HJK 2 - 0 VPS
Arch Bell - Sunday, September 20, 2009
HJK showed why they are tops in the Veikkausliiga after downing Lawrence Smith and VPS on Sunday at Finnair Stadium in Helsinki.

Smith was a second half substitute at forward for VPS head coach Petri Vuorinen whose squad got shut out for the second week in a row.

Smith came on in the 57th minute for Pekka Kainu but the damage had already been done as HJK had a firm grasp on the match. The South Carolina native was able to get a couple scoring chances but nothing ever came to fruition for the striker.

An HJK goal in the first half was inevitable as the hosts were bombarding the VPS defense with scoring opportunities from all angles.

Gambian midfielder Dawda Bah netted the game's first goal in the 40th minute when a quick touch pass from Sebastian Sorsa hit Bah in mid-stride who then outraced the defense before beating VPS goalkeeper Henri Sillanpaa with a shot.

Juho Mäkelä doubled the margin in the 62nd minute when he received a lobbed pass from Bah just outside the area and skillfully launched a shot that Sillanpaa could not stop.

VPS' tough three games in seven days stretch now returns them home on Wednesday to take on FC Inter as Smith and Crew drop to ninth with 29 points.
