PREVIEW: BRØNSHØJ BK - FC MIDTJYLLAND
David Smith - Tuesday, September 15, 2009
After sitting out the weekend's league loss to Nordsjælland, Danny Califf will hope to get the start for Midtjylland as they take a trip to Brønshøj BK for the Danish Cup third round.

The Wolves are suffering through one of the roughest patches of recent memory for the club, as they have only managed to pull a single victory through their first eight league games, losing their last four by a combined 8-1 scoreline.

The struggles have led to both a coaching change and frequent lineup shuffling, with usual central defense starter Califf falling victim to the latest as he sat as an unused substitute during Saturday's 2-0 home loss to Nordsjælland.

If they have any hope to salvage a respectable season, Wednesday's Ekstra Bladet Cup third-round match-up against the third tier club Brønshøj should be their best chance for a first step since the Wolves come in as clear favorites despite their league troubles.

The Copenhagen-based Brønshøj currently reside in fourth place in Denmark's 2nd Division East, and have hopes of promotion back to the 1st Division where they last competed in the 2005-06 season.

While they have found moderate success in past Danish Cup competitions having twice reached the semifinals, the recent decades have been lean as their last season in the Danish top flight was in 1989.

Wednesday's encounter with The Wasps will seem a bit of deja vu for Wolves coach Allan Kuhn, as he also faced the same team one year prior in the competition's third round with his team in the midst of a calamitous slump, however while still assistant coach with Aalborg.

He will surely be hoping for a more stress-free afternoon than the previous encounter which required a last-minute equalizer and ultimate overtime winner to assure his team's advancement to the next round, but will nevertheless have another improbable run to the final in the back of his head as all other routes into European competition are already likely out of reach for his team.

Kuhn will be without defender Kolja Afriyie who will sit thanks to an Achilles injury, but will see the return of Romanian midfielder Gheorghe Florescu who is back from suspension.

Brønshøj coach Bo Henricksen is reporting no injuries or suspensions to his squad prior to the game.
