Ryan Guy played his part in helping St Patrick's Athletic claim a 1-0 win over Drogheda United on Sunday to move up to sixth place in the league.
Having been knocked out of the Europa League on Thursday when they lost to Steaua Bucharest, Jeff Kenna's side were eager to register a positive response and they certainly did that by taking the three points on offer.
The only goal of the game arrived with just ten minutes remaining, but the Super Saints could and should have taken the lead long before that with Guy sparking the first meaningful attack of the game.
Guy burst down the right flank and picked out team-mate Garreth O'Connor with a precise cross, although the former Burnley man saw his header get cleared by Scott Gibb.
Mark Quigley then had a good chance that was saved by Drogheda keeper Steve Williams, before Guy also failed to find the back of the net after he was put through on goal by Glen Fitzpatrick.
The visitors had some chances of their own with James Chambers, Ross Gaynor, and Conor Kenna all trying their luck, while Brian King smashed a header against the crossbar.
St Pat's were the stronger team though and their hard work was rewarded on 81 minutes when Stuart Byrne scored from close range after Quigley's original shot was rebounded into the path of the midfielder.
Next up for the Inchicore outfit is a Dublin derby against Shamrock Rovers on Friday. |
