Benfica attacker Freddy Adu is reportedly on the verge of joining Odense BK in Denmark on a one-year loan.
Adu, 20, who recently denied a reported move back to FC Dallas in MLS, is now squarely in the sights of the Europa League participants.
"Nothing is done yet," the US international told YA. "It's a proposed loan deal."
"I've got to go there and finish everything so I'll keep you updated."
However, the club who finished second in 2008/09 is remaining coy.
"We know who the player is and we have been following him," Odense Communications Director Peter Hψrlόch told YA. "For the moment we cannot say anything more."
Denmark has quickly become one of the major destinations for Americans, with Benny Feilhaber being the most notable US players in the country, resurrecting his career at AGF Aarhus alongside countryman Jeremiah White.
Should Adu join the Danes, it would mark the second consecutive year in which he spent away from Portugal, following last season's forgettable stint at AS Monaco.
He's still a pup. Agreed, he needs to play. That's crucial. Be consistent, Freddy. Don't let the negative hype get to you. Just pony up and play your game.

Danish league, Algerian League, Chinese league...at this point, it dosen't matter what league he is in, Adu just needs to play. Benfica simply took a flier on him when it bought him from MLS. They had nothing to lose if it didn't work out. Benfica left him at Monaco even though he was never going to play for them. Benfica banished him. They knew he was not going to be in their plans. Now, he's been loaned out to OB-with the hopes that they'll keep him. Adu needs to get over the fact that needs to be on a top team and get back to doing what he's been blessed to do-play soccer. If he does this then and only then will the US Nat'l bring him back. Until then...

good for freddy , i think if he plays well and starts for the whole year he will either be the first sub off the bench for benfica or they will sell him to the dutch leauge or scotland maybe , but go freddy !!!

Because Nike decides your a great player at 14 does not mean you will become a great player at 20. Freddy can't crack the lineup on the MNT. He can't crack the lineup for AS Monaco he is going to Denmark (nothing against Denmark but this is a step back given the promise Freddy once showed). I am not certain where the fascination comes from with Feddy. Until he proves he can play consistently with any club (Denmark, MLS or wherever) we should stop suggesting he is the next coming (oh wait I can't think of a name in US soccer to suggest here). We and Freddy have a long way to go folks.

Adu needs to play regularly in some club's first team. Period. It doesn't matter where or for whom.

The bottomline is this, Adu needs to play, period. If going to Denmark will get him time to actually play, but it will give him a chance to play in the Europa League as well, which if he plays well could ensure not only a spot on the WC 2010 team but more exposure for bigger teams in Europe. I am pretty sure Adu is well aware of his status on the USMNT and that he has to play this year to make the team and see any potential playing time as well.
Adu has shown on more than one occasion and at different levels what he is capable of. He just needs to begin to put the talent and ability together and continue to grow as a player. Adu can no longer play the "name game" with teams. This is the best possible and feasible move for Adu. I am sure he wants to not only be on the USMNT, but actually see playing time, which is very possible still.

As one other poster said Holland would have been a better destination. It's not a slam on Danish football, the Eredivisie is a stronger league and I think it would be a good fit for Freddy.

@ethan: i am not even sure Adu will make it into the starting 11 in OB....!! Soccer clubs are cynical. it's about having good backup players. in the attack OB have perhaps the strongest lineup in Denmark...Players like Peter Utaka, Djemba-Nyren and Caca. Caca scores 3 of 4 goals in his debut two weeks ago...and he is not even in the starting 11....

I was a bit surprised when the news came online about the loan deal. Adu are one of the best players in Manager games and were one of the biggest talent for few years ago and his goals and play were highly watched on youtube.com.
But now Adu are 20 years old and on the verve not being a talent anymore but need to show his stuff and I agree that a smaller club would serve him better than a substitute position in a bigger club.
Im a fan of a competitive club to OB (Odense Boldklub) but I think OB are the right club to join, the coach are the old captain of the national team of Denmark / he won the EURO 1992.
The team have some "bigger" stars like old Milan defender Thomas Helveg and the Man Utd midfielder Eric Djemba Djemba.
The team have a great offense and stabil defence and maybe have some problems on the off.midfielder position and Adu could start his career again with a lot of playing time.
I welcome Adu to the Danish League, a league with a lot of big stars from Sweden, Norway, Czech, USA, Gambia, Ghana, Nigeria and off course Denmark.
