BRADLEY ADDS SEVEN TO GOLD CUP ROSTER
Rich Fidler - Thursday, July 2, 2009
US head coach Bob Bradley has announced seven additions to the Gold Cup roster after CONCACAF allowed the Americans to name a 30-man roster following their Confederation's Cup participation.

The seven players, three of which play abroad, all come from the 23-man roster that US Soccer took to South Africa and led the team to their first ever FIFA event final where they lost 3-2 to Brazil following a second half collapse.

Villarreal striker Josmer Altidore, who scored a goal against world number one Spain, was named to the roster along with Colorado Rapids' striker Conor Casey who saw minimal time in South Africa as he was reduced to minimal duty coming off the bench.

The midfielder trio of Ricardo Clark, Benny Feilhaber and Sacha Kljestan was also named to the expanded roster. Clark and Kljestan, a former player under Bradley at CD Chivas, were both shown red cards in the Confederations Cup for late, reckless tackles against Italy and Brazil respectively.

The Houston Dynamo midfielder and Feilhaber, a regular for AGF Aarhus in Denmark, teamed up in the center of the park in the final when regular starter Michael Bradley missed the game due to his own red card against Spain.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan, former MLS goalkeeper of the year, and defender Jonathan Bornstein, another regular for CD Chivas, round out Bob Bradley's selections.

US Soccer will not carry a 30-man roster with them in their travels, but the seven players would be available to travel to Seattle, Washington DC or Boston to suit up for the Red, White and Blue should the coaching staff feel they were needed.

The Americans open Gold Cup group play on Saturday, July 4th against Grenada at Qwest Field in Seattle, Washington.

Okay, so adding some first team regulars is great, and sure they won't be competing in the full squad, but if the teams gets to the finals they'll all be used.

Wasn't this competition for the B squad? Shouldn't we let them continue to play if they get that far? We know what the guys added can do.

Whatever happened to Bobby Convey? I still think he's the answer to our left back.
