BRADLEY ADDS SEVEN TO GOLD CUP ROSTER
Rich Fidler - Thursday, July 2, 2009
US head coach Bob Bradley has announced seven additions to the Gold Cup roster after CONCACAF allowed the Americans to name a 30-man roster following their Confederation's Cup participation.

The seven players, three of which play abroad, all come from the 23-man roster that US Soccer took to South Africa and led the team to their first ever FIFA event final where they lost 3-2 to Brazil following a second half collapse.

Villarreal striker Josmer Altidore, who scored a goal against world number one Spain, was named to the roster along with Colorado Rapids' striker Conor Casey who saw minimal time in South Africa as he was reduced to minimal duty coming off the bench.

The midfielder trio of Ricardo Clark, Benny Feilhaber and Sacha Kljestan was also named to the expanded roster. Clark and Kljestan, a former player under Bradley at CD Chivas, were both shown red cards in the Confederations Cup for late, reckless tackles against Italy and Brazil respectively.

The Houston Dynamo midfielder and Feilhaber, a regular for AGF Aarhus in Denmark, teamed up in the center of the park in the final when regular starter Michael Bradley missed the game due to his own red card against Spain.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan, former MLS goalkeeper of the year, and defender Jonathan Bornstein, another regular for CD Chivas, round out Bob Bradley's selections.

US Soccer will not carry a 30-man roster with them in their travels, but the seven players would be available to travel to Seattle, Washington DC or Boston to suit up for the Red, White and Blue should the coaching staff feel they were needed.

The Americans open Gold Cup group play on Saturday, July 4th against Grenada at Qwest Field in Seattle, Washington.

Didn't Wynne play in the first two games of the confederations cup and wasn't he terrible or am I remembering incorrectly? Maybe that was the qualifiers...

CONOR CASEY PROVED A LAZY SUB IN CONF.CUP. WHAT WAS NEEDED OF HIM WAS TO RUN EVERY BALL TO THE MAX, NOT SPRINT FIVE YARDS & WATCH HIS EXHAUSTED TEAMMATES BATTLE. AFTER SEEING DONOVAN RUN 40 YDS TO TRACK DOWN AN OPONENT, CASEY'S DISPLAY WAS VERY DISAPPOINTING.

Why Add Connor Casey? He showed that he's not a hard worker at the Conferations Cup... OK, Charle Davies has a suspension to serve in Sweden, so staying with the squad makes sense and Joze is still auditioning for a new team or at least some consideration for playing time... but Casey?

They already have Kenny Cooper, who deserves a shot and Brian Ching, hopefully now heathy as large target Strikers, we don't need this many all in camp at the same time... besides if you want a large target Striker from MLS I'd think I'd try Edson Buddle before using Casey again.

See, this is why Bradley gives me fits. The timing of these callups is ALL WRONG. Why eviscerate a number of MLS teams of their key players (Houston and Chivas, my sympathies) to run out players that are already known quantities? What will Bornstein Clark Kljestan and Ching show Senior that he doesn't already know? The stock of these players can only go down at the end of this tourney, but we know he won't eliminate them from his options unless they forget how to trap.

Meanwhile there are a number of younger players in Europe who represent the next generation of the USMNT who should be getting experience against CONCACAF sides. players like Arguez, Ferrari, Jeffrey, Gibson, Grella, Hill, Orozco, Simek, Szetala, Tabe, Taylor, Torres, Vidal, Whitbread, Zizzo in addition to Adu, Feilhaber, Cherundolo, Guzan and Robles.

Just don't get it....

Seems like Marvell Wynne would have been a good addition since he is young and saw no Confederations Cup mins.

TORRES!!!
He's a starter for Pachuca, and led his team to the top of the mexican table, how can you ignore this guy????!!!
it seems Bradley prefers physical players over SUPERIOR technicall skill
if I was torres, i would be in the gym 24/7 to make up for his short size
