VILLARREAL: NO ALTIDORE MOVE IMMINENT
Rich Fidler - Wednesday, July 1, 2009
Despite published reports elsewhere, for the moment, Villarreal striker Jozy Altidore will return to the Spanish club as planned within the next two weeks.

Altidore has been the subject of transfer rumors including a move to Premiership club Fulham or even a possible return back to newly promoted Spanish Primera club Xerez where the New Jersey native spent the second half of last season on loan without ever playing a minute.

Now, recent speculation has Altidore already packing his bags to play for Greek powerhouse Olympiakos, however his current club would not confirm that a move across the Mediterranean was imminent.

"At this moment, Altidore is not going to Olympiakos," Villarreal press office Hernan Sanz told YA. "There is nothing official to report."

The former New York Red Bull is coming off a Confederations Cup which saw him score the game-winning goal against world number one Spain in the semifinal in addition to getting the starting nod by head coach Bob Bradlery in every match throughout the tournament.

The performance of Altidore in South Africa was on full display for all European clubs to see, however Sanz insists that the first American ever to score in a La Liga match will be back in the fold with the Yellow Submarine .

"Altidore is expected to return to Villarreal and report for preseason training on July 13," Sanz noted.

Altidore made six appearances with the Comunidad de Valencia club and scored one goal prior to his transfer to then second division Xerez.

Well I doubt Villareal would loan Joze to Xerex now that they are in the top flight, but if they see him as an investment then they will again look to a 2nd Division contender or a team in another league for him to see playing time. I strongly doubt that Villareal are through buying players so even if for the moment Altidore has moved up in the pecking order, I just don't see this team putting that much trust in such a young player...
As for Adu, well Monaco is clearly NOT the answer, he still belongs to Benfica and it is up to them to show just how much faith they have in him. He really needs to play in these Gold Cup games, to show that he in fact CAN play... it is important for Bob Bradley to be aware of this fact and help showcase this kid or he very well may start to atrophy... and those of us who saw him play in the u-20's know that would be a great shame.

Jozy needs to play, period. But I do agree that he needs to be in Villareal in a competitive spot to try "earn" his time on the field with them. I fully expect Jozy to be loaned out to an Italian or Spanish club in which he will actually see playing time. I could potentially see him going back to Xerez for another season as they were interested in him coming back at the end of his loan deal.

Jozy needs to work on his first touch and ball possession and see the field. Adu needs to leave Benfica and seek playing time, anywhere.

I don't want to see Altidore or Adu loaned out. We need to be patient with these two players and other young footballers like them. I wouldn't want to see them loaned out simply for the purpose of match play. When managers get loaned players in general they have no vested interest in their development and are only really concernd with what they can get FROM them, not what they can do for them. The should stay under the managers that invested in them and work to come off the first team bench, as well reserve time.

just work on your first touch and your football brain. you have what it takes to be a serious goalscorer and asset to any team. you just need regular playing time.

Long term development, we need him at a club like Villarreal where he has to earn a starting spot in a tough environment. However, for our world cup chances next year, we need him to get playing time, even if that means a loan to an mls team for a year.

Villareal paid good money for him. They like him and plan to get the most out of him - either by playing him or selling him (eventually). Villareal was shocked that Xerex didn't play him - that was not the plan. I expect him to play for Villareal this season OR be loaned out to another team in Spain or Italy. I don't think he will go anywhere else.

Nihat and Franco are both leaving the club so at the moment, Josy has gone fron 5th to 3rd in the pecking order. There may yet be more signing but as Rossi may be heading back to Italy, I think Josy should see much more playing time this year. It is up to him to improve his touch and movement. Size alone isn't enough in Spain where all players are expected to have decent technique. Still he looked better every game he played in South Africa so an extended run in the team could see him develop nicely.

jozy, do whatever it takes to find a club in a top league that will play you every game. even if it is for a middle tier team, find one and score goals my friend and you will be on your way to an awesome career.
