With the Under-20 World Cup in Egypt fast approaching, US national team member Sheanon Williams is anxious to get back to Europe this summer and find a team.
The fixture at right back for Thomas Rongen's team says the team has improved over recent camps, including the camp two weeks ago in Sarasota, in which they managed a win and a draw in two friendly matches against regional champions Costa Rica.
"It was a short camp," Williams said. "The first game went well, we gave up a goal but we did well to get two back and we won the game. The second game we went down by two or three goals and we came back and tied so we saved the loss."
Williams played the full ninety in both matches. The former UNC Tar Heel dropped out of school after his freshman season last year to pursue opportunities in Europe, but was unable to cement a deal during the winter transfer period.
"I dropped out in December right after the Final Four and I went on two trials," the Massachusetts native said, "but I had to be back for national team camp and the transfer window closed on me."
Williams says he is preparing to return to Europe once again this summer to seek out a club, though he is still unsure of his exact destination.
"Now it's the offseason and I'm just waiting for it start back up so I can go back on trial as soon as possible, which will be July or early August," he said. "I've been weighing my options as far as countries. The main countries would be Germany or France but maybe Scandinavian teams as well."
The Trinidadian dual national says he is looking to sign before the season begins, but has a pair of backup plans if nothing works out this time around.
"If nothing works out before the U-20 World Cup then that would be a last resort right there," the speedy wing back says of the tournament in Egypt, where numerous European scouts will be present.
In his downtime Williams has been keeping his local options open as well.
"I did some training with the Revolution but I can't sign there because I would have to go to a lottery," he explained. "MLS is not absolutely out of the picture but I've been more focused on doing something in Europe."
Williams played in four of the five qualifying matches in Trinidad and Tobago this spring, as the US qualified for the World Cup in Egypt, beginning in September. Overall, the former Tar Heel has nine caps and a goal at the U-20 level. |
