US Under-20 forward Vincenzo Bernardo is staying busy with Napoli's Primavera youth team as the season winds down, though he remains unsure what this summer might bring.
Bernardo says he has just returned from a tournament in which he managed a goal and two assists against an American squad from IMG Academy.
"Things with Napoli are going well," Bernardo says. "I'm doing very well here in the closing end of the season."
The New Jersey native says his Primavera squad is currently embroiled in a playoff battle that will cap what has for him been a successful season with Napoli's youth side.
"We play Genoa in the Primavera playoffs. As soon as the Primavera season is over, along with the Serie A season, then I will be heading back to New Jersey for my off season."
Bernardo says his immediate future is up in the air as he sorts out possibilities for next year, and that it is too early to say much.
"As for my future, to be honest a lot can change for next season, but as of now I really don't know much and what I do know I can not make public yet," he says. "We will see what happens during the month of July."
The soon-to-be nineteen-year-old has been looked at by US U-20 coach Thomas Rongen on various occasions, but Bernardo says that he has not heard from the US of late.
"I have not been contacted by the U-20s yet, but I am hoping to hear from them soon as it's always an honor," he said. "Right now I'm focused on finishing strong here and working hard during my off season, to be ready for any possible call ups."
Bernardo did not play in the first leg of the playoffs over the weekend, which Napoli won by a 3-1 scoreline. The attacker has not been included in an upcoming U-20 camp to take place in Bradenton, Florida, in preparation for the U-20 World Cup in Egypt late this summer. |
