Quentin Westberg and Freddy Adu watched from the bench as both Monaco and les Troyes stumbled on the road.
Nice 0 - 1 Rennes
Carlos Bocanegra and Rennes got back to winning ways on the road in Nice this weekend on match day 25 of Ligue 1.
Though unbeaten at home, les Rouge et Noir earned just their third away win this season on Saturday evening.
The hosts were on their heels through much of the first half. Rennes' best chance fell to Rod Fanni who ended a superb solo run down the heart of the Nicois defense with a laser off the outside of the far post.
Play evened after the break. After a fairly impotent opening 45 minutes, the hosts nearly took the lead. In the 60th, Rennes keeper Nicolas Douchez was beaten by Erik Mouloungui's well struck effort from inside the area, but an untimely deflection from Julien Sable kept the goal bound strike outside the posts.
Off a quick counter attack just seconds later, Bruno Cheyrou sent the ball out wide to Jimmy Briand who slotted a first time ball across the face of goal to a wide open Olivier Thombert and the midfielder made no mistake in front of an open Nice goal for the game-winner.
Bocanegra and the Rennes defense showed their class in another shutout performance as the American captain continues to impress in his new European home.
Next up, Rennes take on league leaders Lyon.
Notes
Freddy Adu traveled with the team but did not dress when Monaco lost 2-1 away against Lille. The young American will hope to find his way onto the field next week against Saint Etienne at the Louis II.
Quentin Westberg watched from the bench as les Troyes fell to Clermont 1-0 in Ligue 2 action. This week, ESTAC is set to face Lens. |
