23 TICKETS TO SOUTH AFRICA
Thursday, December 11, 2008
The hex is on its way, and though realistically only a total catastophe would prevent the US from qualifying, we still have shaken up the roster considerably.

Numerous players have been booted off the plane including Brian Ching, Ricardo Clark and Jonathan Spector while Eddie Johnson, not surprisingly, is only making up the numbers.

Marcus Hahnemann returns, Charlie Davies gets a seat on the strength of his stellar season in Sweden while the MLS champs send two newbies to the airport.

Again, for this feature, we at YA are prognosticating who we think that the US head coach will call up to his final roster, not who we think should go.

As always, feel free to drop us a line if you agree, disagree or somewhere in between.

PACK YOUR BAGS, BOYS
Carlos Bocanegra - D, Saint-Etienne (France)
Seems to be reborn at Rennes. (KB) Finally, a Yank field player consistently in the lineup for a top team in its league. (BL)
Landon Donovan - M/F, Los Angeles Galaxy (USA)
Hopefully third time's a charm in Germany. (DS) Don't screw this up please, Landon. (CW)
Tim Howard - GK, Everton (England)
Number one for years to come (GM) Has not been sharp this season, but I'm not too worried about American keepers (CW)
Oguchi Onyewu - D, AC Milan (Italy)
Has been quietly going about his business and doing it well. (MA) How much longer can he stick around in Belgium? (RF)
Michael Bradley - M, Borussia Mönchengladbach (Germany)
No way Pops would leave him home (MA) Chances that he'll be left out? Very Slim. (GM)

NEARLY A LOCK
Clint Dempsey - M/F, Fulham (England)
Not sure what Hodgson is thinking. (KB) Needs more consistency on the club level, but it's hard to see anybody displacing him. (DS)
Steve Cherundolo - D, Hannover 96 (Germany)
He's still an excellent option on the wing. (RF) The best we’ve got at right back, but not invincible as a starter. (DS)

FAIRLY SAFE BET
Freddy Adu - M/F, Benfica (Portugal)
He isn't seeing much playing time, which has to be a concern. (RF) He'll be there in 2010, but if he can't find the field for his club first, he probably won't see much time in South Africa either. (BL)
Josmer Altidore - F, Villarreal (Spain)
Villareal needs to figure out what to do with him. (KB) Cazorla, Rossi, Nihat. Pals around with some impressive company, and it looks to be rubbing off on him. (BL)
Brad Guzan - GK, Aston Villa (England)
When can we see you play a club game? (MA) Learning from Friedel is about as good as it gets. (RF)
DaMarcus Beasley - M/F, Out of contract
Slowly disappearing into the foggy abyss of Glasgow. (DS) Seeing little time is a pathetic league shouldn't get you to a World Cup. (CW)
Heath Pearce - D/M, FC Dallas 96 (USA)
Still isn't letting go of his stranglehold. (GS) The left back spot is his to lose. (KB)
Maurice Edu - M/F, Rangers (Scotland)
Dropped off the radar screen faster than a stealth bomber in Scotland. (BL) Working himself out of the mix? (GS)

IN A BATTLE
Marcus Hahnemann - GK, Wolverhampton (England)
He'll be the security blanket in between the pipes. (RF) Having a monster year at Reading. (CW)
Sacha Kljestan - M, Anderlecht (Belgium)
Until Adu proves he deserves 90 minutes, this is your starting attacking midfielder. (BL) Versatile and sufficient. (DS)
Kenny Cooper - F, 1860 Munich (Germany)
He is the answer to the role relinquished by Brian McBride (KB) A successful move abroad will force the issue.(BL)
Danny Califf - D, Philadelphia Union (USA)
Is one of the top central defenders in the Danish league, and has a strong argument as our current third choice behind Boca and Gooch. (DS)

WORK TO DO
Marvell Wynne - D, Toronto FC (Canada)
If he keeps developing like his, hes at least a shoo-in for Cherundolo's backup. (DS) Needs a move to Europe to refine his game. (BL)
Charlie Davies - F, Sochaux (France)
A goal in a meaningless qualifier shouldn't raise your stock so much, but we need some spark up front alongside Jozy. (BL)
Chad Marshall - D, Columbus Crew (USA)
Hard to believe he just turned 24. (CW) His upcoming move to Europe will push him past DeMerit and Califf. (RF)
Robbie Rogers - M/F, Columbus Crew (USA)
Needs to show he can play both ways for ninety minutes. (BL) Star in the making. (RF)
Eddie Johnson - F, Fulham (England)
Where is he playing again? (GM) The fact that his name is on the list at all is worrying. (MA)
Jay DeMerit - D, Watford (England)
Still waiting for a real chance. (GM) DeMerit is turning out to be the Taylor Twellman of the defense. Can he ever get a real run-out? (CW)
MOVING UP

Arturo Alvarez - Good young attacker made noise in MLS last season. Should get a look. (CW)

Jemal Johnson - Having a much more productive season than the other Johnson. (MA)

Jose Francisco Torres - Italy got Rossi and Serbia is probably getting Subotic...We got Torres...um...take that Mexico! (DS)

MOVING DOWN

Brian Ching - Can he be more consistent?

Jonathan Spector - Will he ever heal? (MA)

Ricardo Clark - Only if Junior, Edu and Pablo were all to go down at once. (BL)

OTHER BUBBLE BATTLERS

Bobby Convey, Benny Feilhaber, Cory Gibbs, Will Hesmer, Stuart Holden, Eddie Lewis, Kasey Keller, Pablo Mastroeni, Michael Orozco, Michael Parkhurst, Matt Pickens, Frank Simek, Danny Szetela, Taylor Twellman, Jeremiah White, David Yelldell, Sal Zizzo

note: note: Yanks Abroad's Michael Adubato, Kenya Brown, Rich Fidler, Brent Latham, George Murphy, David Smith, Chad Winger compiled this feature.
