Despite failing to earn a permanent place in the Monaco line up, a confident Freddy Adu is optimistic about his future in the Principality.
Adu, who opened his scoring account with the US National Team against Guatemala in a recent World Cup qualifier with a Beckhamesque free kick, remained nevertheless humble regarding his perfomrance.
"I though it was alright," the 19-year old said. "I could definitely have done better. Obviously I could play better and get out of myself a little. But we won and that's the important thing at the end of the day.
"I did some good things during the game, but there are always things I need to work on."
Fighting for a spot on the potential World Cup 2010 roster, Adu understands that he needs to find his way on the field in Monaco.
"I have to perform to get there. I realize it is important to be playing with my club, so I have to focus on that. Wwith the National Team as always, I have to produce. I will continue to work hard and hopefully everything will come together"
The young American has managed just one start since his arrival in the Principality and has only been used sparingly off the bench, but Adu has shown flashes of the brilliance that first attracted the club's interest despite his limited opportunities on the field.
"I am not playing as much as I would like at the moment, but that will change soon. I am looking better and playing better," the Benfica loanee said. "Coach Ricardo has been telling me that my chance will come."
"I am looking forward to getting a start in a league game soon. I have to be patient, but my chance is coming. I know it is coming."
Recently against Le Mans Adu exploded into the monotony of the dying moments of a three nothing romp. Nearly setting up one and scoring another, he brought the content but bored fans to their feet.
"When I get a chance, I just try and do what I can whether I get ninety minutes, ten minutes or four minutes like [against Le Mans]. It's not a great feeling obviously, but as a pro, when your number is called, you have to give 100% to help the team."
Although his appearances have been largely limited to ten minute cameos in the late stages, Adu has begun to win the confidence of Ricardo as he continues to include the young player in action. While his performances have kept him in the plans of the Brazilian coach, the American midfielder has struggled to definitively prove himself.
"The league is physical and fast here in France," the former DC United champion said. "It is a challenge, but it prepares you for the next step, for anywhere you go.
"It will help prepare me to play anywhere in the world whether it be against a big physical team or technical or fast one. You know you can deal with it." |
