PREVIEW: FRENCH LEAGUE CUP ACTION
Tuesday, September 23, 2008
Carlos Bocanegra will get his first taste of French cup action while Freddy Adu hopes to start for Monaco.

Monaco - Paris St. Germain

Freddy Adu will look to prove his worth in what looks like a great opportunity to earn significant minutes when the red and white take on PSG in a replay of the season opener.

Forced to deal with many injuries, Monaco will be without Serge Jakpe who looks like he may not return this year as well as Brazilian defender Pereira da Silva Adriano who still has not recovered from an injury picked up in the club's last meeting with the Parisians.

Jean-Jacques Grosso will also be left out as result of an injury suffered against Marseille this past Sunday.

PSG who were only recently allowed to play in the tournament after being banned from the competition for a racists banner, have announced they will rest many key players because of a grueling domestic and European schedule.

Captain Claude Makelele, Guillaume Hoarau, and the one-time Monaco player, Lodovic Giuly will all not take part in the contest. The need for rest as well as injuries will see a very different starting eleven for the guests as center back Mamadou Salcho and midfielder Clemen Chantome will also be left out because of a groin injury and a sprained ankle.

The Cup champions from last season will begin the defense of their title, while Monaco hope to preserve the momentum of their tie with Marseille and win against Lorient.

Rennes - Le Mans

Le Mans will hope to break down Carlos Bocanegra and the Rennes defense as they do battle on Wednesday night in the first round of the French League Cup.

Still without their explosive new striker, Gyan Assomoah, Rennes will have to look elsewhere for a goal scoring threat. A torn right thigh muscle has kept the Ghanaian out for most of September.

Le Mans seem to be one of the few teams to escape the seemingly inevitable problem of injuries as all eleven starters will be available.

Both teams coming off a draw in last weekend's league play, the two clubs will hope to come away with three points and begin their league cup campaigns with a win.

Notes

Andrew Jacobsen will not travel with FC Lorient for their midweek game against last year's cup finalists Lens because of injury.

Quentin Westberg, who earned man of the match honors in his team's last Cup game, will hope to earn another start on Wednesday when Troyes take on Metz at the Saint-Symphorien.
