Yelldell moves up a division
Former Stuttgart Kickers and keeper David Yelldell has signed with 2. Bundesliga club TuS Koblenz.
"Yelldell has signed for three years," Koblenz general manager Hans Dill told YA. "He was out of contract at Stuttgart so naturally he comes on a free transfer."
Yelldell who played all but two matches over three seasons since joining from Blackburn Rovers, was perhaps the greatest reason that this season's Kickers did not drop into the nether regions of Germany's soccer structure.
Despite Stuttgart finishing 10th in the Regionalliga Süd with an 11-11-12 record, the American held the opposition to an 1.02 Goals Against Average, best in the division.
However Dill stopped short over calling the newly acquired American the new starter.
"He won't be the 'automatic' number one," Dill suggested. "We are currently looking at two other goalkeepers and the best will be the one that is in goal."
Yelldell could be the second American on TuS Koblenz, potentially joining defender Josh Grenier who has yet to resign after having his contract end following the season.
