DC DRAFT PICK SKIPS MLS FOR FRANCE
Chad Winger - Wednesday, January 30, 2008

FC Lorient

Jacobson presented in France

DC United draft pick Andrew Jacobson has foregone signing with MLS, inking a deal with French Ligue 1 club FC Lorient.

"He has signed until the end of the season," Lorient press officer Christophe Legal confirmed to YA. "He is training with the team already."

Jacobson, college teammate of 1860 Munich defender Steve Purdy and VfL Wolfsburg's Kamani Hill at California, was the 24th overall pick in the 2008 Super Draft - DC United's first.

The 2007 All-American midfielder, 22, appeared in 83 games with the Golden Bears, tallying 11 goals and 13 assists. Despite starting the final 61 games of his college career, FC Lorient is making no guarantees in France.

"He is a young player so we don't know if he will play right away with the first team," Legal noted. "If he plays soon will depend on how he does in training."

FC Lorient is a surprising sixth in the Ligue 1 standings, ahead of such powerhouse clubs Marseille and Paris St. Germain.
