Smith in Bolton preseason
Bolton Wanderers attacker Johann Smith has joined League Two club Darlington FC on a one-month loan.
"We expect a lot from him," the Quakers' Caroline Walker told YA. "He seems to fit right in, is quite handy and very enthusiastic fellow."
"He had a great assist for our first goal during our last training match. He is really joyful to watch."
Smith, 20, played part of last season at Carlisle United, scoring one goal in 14 appearances. Over the summer, he was named to the United States Under-20 team for the World Cup in Canada, but a severe ankle knock ruled him out of the competition.
Smith, who could make his debut against Stockport County on Sunday, is not joining Darlington as an unknown quantity, according to managing director Barry Simmonds.
"I know Johann from my time at Bolton Wanderers," Simmonds explained to YA. "He is following in the tradition of other American players I have worked with such as Gregg Berhalter and Jovan Kirovski at Crystal Palace who went on to have established international careers."
"I hope we can play a small part in Johann's progression."
Darlington, who last year had Jemal Johnson on loan, currently sit in second place in the League Two standings after narrowly missing promotion last season.
