CALIFF: DEFENSE KEY TO UEFA BERTH
Thursday, January 25, 2007
Aalborg backline marshal Danny Califf believes the club will be able to lock down a UEFA Cup berth for next fall if they return from the SAS Liga winter break as stingy as they were at the beginning of the season.

The team raced out to an early tabletop position in large part thanks to a defense that conceded only seven times in the first 10 matches.

Back-to-back home losses to Heath Pearce's FC Nordsjælland and Randers FC then saw Califf & Co. allow seven goals, beginning a mini-slide sent them towards the fourth place standing they will resume the schedule with in the spring.

In Denmark, the title winners go to the Champions League, while the next two finishers gain entrance to the UEFA Cup.

"I think if we can get back defensively to the way we started out, then we can get back towards the top and qualify for Europe," the California native told YA.

"We sorta slumped there towards the break, but in 18 games we only gave up 17 goals, and that's pretty good."

Califf and AaB get back to league action with a March 11th visit from multi-Yank outfit Viborg.
