RECAP: WEEKEND FRENCH ACTION Sunday, November 12, 2006
Jeremiah White made a 20-minute appearance in a losing cause for Gueugnon, while Quentin Westberg was an unused substitute for Troyes.
FC Gueugnon 0 - 1 SM Caen
Despite his coach's insistence that he was rested at midweek versus Istres, Jeremiah White began the game on the bench for the Forgerons, who went down by a score of 1-0 to Caen.
Gueugnon were able to keep the high flying Caen attack at bay until the final minute of the first half when a controversial officiating call awarded the visitors a goal.
Midfielder Alexandre Raineau's shot was stopped and pushed back out into traffic, leaving keeper Romuald Peiser out of position. Forward Yoan Gouffran put a header on frame that Peiser punched up off the cross bar and out, but after very little discussion, it was ruled a goal.
Afterwards, assistant referee Jean Paul Chaudre admitted his error, but the damage had been done.
Had Gueugnon been able to mount any sort of serious offensive, the outcome might have been different, but they never even troubled opposing keeper Vincent Planté.
White came on in the the 56th minute of the second half, a dire half for both teams as Gueugnon were unable to mount any attack against a Caen defense ready to play out the game.
White was given one free kick opportunity that he skied over, and was otherwise a non-factor along with the rest of the Gueugnon attack.
Gueugnon drop to 13th place and next meet Libourne SSi on the road.
Notes
Troyes lost 4-0 at home to last place Monaco as Quentin Westberg watched from the sidelines.
