CHERUNDOLO NAMED NEW HANNOVER CAPTAIN
Clint Waddell - Tuesday July 27, 2010 8 Comments Add a comment?

A new honor for the veteran defender
Defender Steve Cherundolo has been named team captain at Hannover 96 for the coming season.

Head coach Mirko Slomka made the announcement at the end of the team's training camp in Bad Radkersburg in Austria.

The 31-year-old US national team player has been with the team for 11 years and recently renewed his contract, which will keep him in uniform with 96 until 2012.

He will be taking over the captain's duties from Arnold Bruggink, whose contract wasn't renewed after it expired in June.

Cherundolo will also be part of the team council, which includes Christian Schulz, Altin Lala, Jan Schlaudraff and Karim Haggui.

Shulz and Cherundolo were also part of the council last season.

Way to go Steve, you've always been a pioneer for yanks in europe. I'd like to see Cherundolo coach in Germany one day and then potentially be a USMNT head coach.

We're all proud of you and it was exciting to watch you in the WC. Being named Captain of Hannover 96 must be one of your major accomplishments. Good luck in the years to come.

Great stuff Stevie! What a great WC he had and overall service he has given to the USMNT. Stalwart performer for both club and country for over a decade. Impressive and underrated performer; this honor is deserved. Congrats Steve.

Congrats Steve! That's just great news after the World Cup and the tragic season Hannover had last year. Hopefully they can move on and inch up the table to a Europa Cup spot! Good Luck!
