RECAP: TOLUCA 0 - 2 CLUB TIJUANA
With two quick goals midway through the second half, Club Tijuana shocked Toluca at home to secure the Liga MX Championship, and the Three Amigos raised the Liga MX trophy.
Edgar Castillo and Joe Corona got the start for the Xoloitzcuintles in a loud Estadio Nemesio Díez, where the Toluca fans were hoping for their team to take control of the game and overcome the 2-1 lead Club Tijuana brought into the game.
Despite the boisterous home crowd, the Xolos never flinched, and once again defeated the vaunted Toluca Red Devils, 2-0, to win the Liga MX Championship on 4-1 aggregate.
After a scoreless first half where Club Tijuana mostly hung back while Toluca struggled to find an offensive surge, all it took was two minutes for the Xolos to bite down hard, twice, and etch their own place in Mexican soccer lore.
Midway through the second half, Toluca began to show signs of desperation and their famed "Hell" of a stadium became a Hell for them as Richard Ruiz and Duvier Riascos combined to seal their fate.
In the 70th minute, Fernando Arce fired a free kick that left Toluca goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera frozen as the ball hit the right sidebar, but the rebound fell to Ruiz in the six-yard box, and he fired to give Club Tijuana the 1-0 lead.
The Xolos bench was still celebrating the first goal when, less than a minute later, Fidel Martínez passed ahead of Riascos, and he went on a run up the middle as the Toluca defense crumbled around him. Riascos streaked into the box, feigned to beat Talavera and fired into the net for the 2-0.
Riascos waved his arms wildly and ripped his jersey off as he ran into a corner of Estadio Nemesio Díez while the infamous "Perra Brava" supporters rained bottles and cups of liquids on him and his ecstatic teammates.
Although Greg Garza did not see any action and Corona had subbed out in the 66th minute for Joshua Ábrego, Castillo went the full 90.
In the end, it did not matter for any of them, as three Yanks in Mexico, the Three Amigos-Castillo, Corona and Garza-lifted the Liga MX trophy in what has been a dream season for them and the astonishing Xolos of Club Tijuana.
