RECAP: WEEKEND GERMAN ACTION
Matchday seven saw Americans taking on Bundesliga royalty with Daniel Williams and Fabian Johnson playing Bayern Munich and Steve Cherundolo and Hannover taking on Dortmund.
Bayern Munich 2 - 0 1899 Hoffenheim
Daniel Williams and Fabian Johnson both lined up for Hoffenheim, who came up short versus Bayern Munich on Saturday.
Williams started in defensive midfield, while Johnson suited up as right fullback for Markus Babel's team; both played 90 minutes.
Hoffenheim came into the match having never beating Bayern in eight matches, a streak that was widely expected to extend to nine.
Although the guests made life difficult for their hosts initially, Bayern's quality did in fact overcome Hoffenheim's energy in the 19th minute.
Williams was beaten to the ball by Toni Kroos in Hoffenheim territory and the ball was eventually fed to Franck Ribery on the left flank. The fleet Frenchman drove past Andreas Beck and beat keeper Koen Casteels in the five-hole with a left-footed shot.
After the restart, Bayern effectively put the game away in the 46th minute as Ribery added a second one-timing a feed from Kroos to Casteels' left and into the back of the net.
The loss was Hoffenheim's first since matchday 3 dropping them into 13th with seven points.
Williams was shown his 5th caution of the season in the 55th minute and will miss Hoffenheim's next match versus Greuther Fürth in two weeks.
Hannover 96 1 - 1 Borussia Dortmund
Steve Cherundolo captained Hannover on Sunday against reigning champion Borussia Dortmund as Hannover snatched a late equalizer to steal a point.
Cherundolo put in 80 minutes of work after putting in a full shift in mid-week Europa League action as head coach Mirko Slomka decided against making any changes to the lineup fielded on Thursday.
Dortmund took the lead in the 26th minute as two talented Poles hooked up. Lukasz Piszcek found Robert Lewandowski with a low-struck cross 7 yards from goal, where the in-demand striker blasted the ball past keeper Ron-Rober Zieler.
Hannover should have equalized in the 78th minute, but Mame Diouf managed to miss from 2 yards out. Diouf, however, did tally the deserved equalizer in the 86th minute redirecting Didier Ya Konan's bicycle kick into the back of the net.
The point leaves Hannover with 11 points in 6th place. Cherundolo and Hannover travel to Frankfurt in two weeks when the Bundesliga resumes.
SV Sandhausen 1 - 0 VfR Aalen
Andrew Wooten got his first start of the season for Sandhausen and notched an assist in a victory over Aalen.
Wooten was one of six changes head coach Gerd Dais effected in an effort to alter Sandhausen's fortunes after picking up a single point in their last five matches.
After an initial feeling out phase, Sandhausen struck quickly and spectacularly. Wooten dribbled defender Daniel Buballa dizzy on the right side before finding Kingsley Onuegbu for a tap-in alone in front of goal in the 19th minute.
Aalen nearly drew level in the 25th minute, but keeper Daniel Ischdonat denied Michael Klauß with a fantastic reflex save.
Wooten nearly got on the scorers sheet himself in the 38th minute, but his shot thumped off the post.
After an impressive attacking display in his first start of the season, Wooten looks to have an excellent chance of starting for Sandhausen against Kaiserslautern in two weeks.
FC Saarbrücken 0 - 0 Preußen Münster
Matt Taylor and Preußen Münster failed to pick up all three points against Saarbrucken on Saturday, but still stayed atop the standings in the 3. Liga.
Taylor played 79 minutes before being subbed off for fellow striker Addy Waku Menga.
Taylor had an excellent scoring chance foiled by opposing keeper Michael Müller in the 61st minute, before the keeper then denied Truckenbrod six minutes later.
With the point, Munster remains in first place with 28 points in 13 games. After a two-week break, Munster and Taylor will host Offenbach.
Alemannia Aachen 1 - 1 SV Darmstadt
Preston Zimmerman snatched a road point for Darmstadt against Aachen.
Zimmerman played the full 90 on Saturday in Darmstadt's attack.
The hosts gained the advantage in the 60th minute as Denis Pozder tucked a spinning shot inside the far post from the edge of the area.
Darmstadt grabbed an equalizer in 76th minute with Caster Tatara pouncing on a loose ball in front of goal from 5 yards out.
Zimmerman and Darmstadt host Borussia Dortmund II in two weeks.
Jermaine Jones sat out Schalke's 2-0 victory against Wolfsburg due to injury.
Alfredo Morales was an unused substitute for Hertha Berlin's 3-0 victory against 1860 Munich.
Royal-Dominique Fennell was not named to the bench for the Stuttgarter Kickers' 3-0 victory over Erfurt.
Joesph Gyau did not make Saint Pauli's bench against Union Berlin Friday in a 2-2 tie.
