RECAP: MIDWEEK MEXICAN ACTION
DaMarcus Beasley and Puebla defeated Herculez Gomez and Estudiantes in Week 15 action, while Michael Orozco helped San Luis beat Querataro.
Puebla 2-1 Estudiantes Tecos
DaMarcus Beasley and Herculez Gomez both went 90 minutes for their teams as Puebla hosted Tecos.
The scoring was opened by Duvier Riascos 9 minutes into the game as the Puebla forward took control of the ball about 20 yards out and dribbled into the left side of the box, before sending a powerful shot to the far post, leaving Tecos goalkeeper Christian Martinez flat footed.
Puebla struck again in the 61st minute with Lucas Silva receiving a clever heel pass from Luis Garcia that split the Tecos defense, allowing Silva to place a clean shot on goal. Martinez came up with the initial save, but Silva leaped on the rebound to place it home.
Tecos would respond in the 90th minute as a desperate long ball came into the box and was met with an attempted clearing header from Aldo Polo Ramirez, but rather than clearing it away from the goal, he was twisted around and sent the ball across the goalbox into the path of Rodrigo Ruiz who headed the ball into goal.
Puebla's victory moved them up to 13th place, where they are within three points of sixth place. Tecos dropped to 14th place.
Both teams play again on October 30th, with Puebla traveling to America and Tecos hosting Cruz Azul.
San Luis 2-1 Queretaro
Michael Orozco returned to action and played 90 minutes for San Luis as they hosted Queretaro.
The first half was largely uneventful aside from two yellow cards that came together to Orozco and Queretaro forward Carlos Bueno during a corner kick scrum in the 6th minute.
Alfredo Moreno opened the scoring for San Luis in the 57th minute as Wilmer Aguirre received a high ball in the box. Being at a bad angle to put it on goal himself, he headed it across the goal to a wide open Moreno who tapped it in past goalkeeper Liborio Sanchez.
Moreno's second goal came in the 73rd minute as Jehu Chiapas controlled the ball at midfield. He played a through ball for Moreno and Queretaro's defense tried and failed with an offsides trap, leaving Moreno free to march in on goal and calmly pass the ball past Sanchez.
Queretaro would respond in the 81st minute as Bueno was gifted a penalty kick from a careless Oscar Perez tackle in the box. The San Luis goalkeeper received a yellow card for his effort, and Bueno converted to the right side of the goal as Perez guessed left.
With the win, San Luis moved up to 10th place, with their 20 points being only four back from 2nd place Santos Laguna. Queretaro dropped to 9th, with 20 points. They lead San Luis by goal differential.
San Luis will next travel to 16th place Tijuana on October 30th.
