MICHAEL ADUBATO - Wednesday, January 3, 2007
Standard Liege has confirmed that prized defender Oguchi Onyewu has met with hot-American destination Fulham FC, but thus far negotiations have not been successful and the two sides remain far apart on any transfer deal.

While Standard released a brief statement on their website about the contact, neither player nor club would comment publicly about any deal.

However, a source close to the negotiations told YA: "[Onyewu] went to London to meet with them today, but there has not been any agreement."

"Fulham offered 1M for him, but that is much less than Standard values him at."

"If they want him bad enough, they are going to have to up the bid."

Meanwhile, Onyewu, displaying uncharacteristic coyness, is prepared to return to Belgium.

"I am neither confirming or denying anything," the Yank said wryly, regarding the trip to London and a Tuesday jaunt to Italy where the player was seen boarding an Alitalia jet to Milan.

"I'm going to join [Standard Liege] tomorrow. I fly to Portugal tomorrow. I think we'll be back in Belgium on the 9th."

"We play Wolfsburg on the 8th, so that should be a good game."

Standard Liege will train in Portugal this week and will play Portimao before facing the German side and their fresh American catch Kamani Hill.
