VILLAFANA RETURNS TO PORTLAND
KENYA BROWN - Thursday, August 9, 2018
Jorge Villafana has headed back to Major League Soccer as he will once again wear the shirt of the Portland Timbers following his transfer from Liga MX team Santos Laguna to deadline day.

Wednesday's transfer came after the Timbers paid the LA Galaxy 75,000 dollars in General Allocation Money and 100,000 dollars in Targeted Allocation Money for the top spot in the Allocation Order to acquire Villafana.

It's with great pleasure that we welcome back Jorge Villafana to the Timbers," said Gavin Wilkinson, general manager and president of soccer for Portland on the team's website. "Jorge played a critical role in helping our club win its first MLS Cup in 2015, and we are thrilled to welcome him back to Portland.

"He returns to the club as an even more experienced and seasoned professional, with his accomplishments with the US National Team and his championship-winning success in Liga MX, and we look forward to his further contributions in his return to Portland."

The 28-year-old defender spent the past three Liga MX campaigns with Santos Laguna, playing in 60 games and helping them to win the 2018 Clausura title.

Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese believes Villafana's experience will go a long way in helping the team achieve success as they head towards the playoffs.

"I have seen from afar the professional growth of Jorge Villafaņa and how his progress has led to success, and we are very pleased to add him to our group. He is a proven winner, contributing to multiple championships over his career, and we believe he will be an impactful and important addition to our team," he said.

Villafana will look to get on the field for the Timbers this weekend when they take on the Vancouver Whitecaps.
