RECAP: WEEKEND GERMAN ACTION
Weston McKennie and Schalke locked down second place with their win over Augsburg while Bobby Wood and John Brooks will see which of their teams will see automatic relegation next week.
Augsburg 1-2 Schalke
Thilo Kehrer scored both goals to help Schalke not only claim all three points over Augsburg at the WWK Arena but also guaranteed that they will finish in second place in the Bundesliga standings.
McKennie started in midfield for the Royal Blues as they booked their return to the Champions League for next season.
The visitors took the lead in the 23rd minute when Kehrer flicked the ball past Augsburg goalkeeper Marwin Hitz following a pass from teammate Guido Burgstaller.
However, Augsburg would level the score four minutes later when they restarted play quickly after the referee called a free-kick. Daniel Baier laid the ball down a sent a pass to Philipp Max, allowing him to slot the ball past Ralf Fahrmann.
Kehrer gave Schalke the lead again in the 34th minute as he headed the ball home following a Daniel Caligiuri corner kick.
Schalke will end the season next week in second place and look forward to playing on Europe's biggest stage next season.
Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 Hamburg
Eintracht Frankfurt kept their hopes of a Europa League place alive as they shutout relegation-threatened Hamburg at the
Timmy Chandler started for Frankfurt but only played 17 minutes while Bobby Wood also started in the loss for his team.
Frankfurt were for a time contending for a Champions League spot but recent poor form and news that their head coach, Niko Kovac, was heading to Bayern Munich next season have affected them on the field. Meanwhile, Hamburg, after many years of surviving, face the strong possibility of relegation with the final game of the season coming this weekend.
Marius Wolf gave Frankfurt the lead in the 31st minute when he was ran onto a through ball from Sebastian Haller and put his shot between the legs of Hamburg goalkeeper Julian Pollersbeck.
The host then sealed the game in the second half as they scored their second in the 77th minute of play. Omar Mascarell struck as his deflected effort hit the back of the net.
Alexander Meier rounded out the scoring in the stoppage time with a volleyed strike after a cross from David Abraham.
Frankfurt sits in seventh place in the standings with 49 points while Hamburg lies 17th with 28 points.
Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Mainz
Borussia Dortmund will have to wait until the final game of the season to know whether they will compete in the Champions League following their loss to Mainz at Signal Iduna Park.
Christian Pulisic was in the starting lineup for BVB in the loss.
Mainz, who are still fighting for their Bundesliga survival, threw a sucker punch as they went on to score in the fourth minute through Bote Baku. The young German put away his first professional goal after being set up by teammate Jean-Philipp Gbamin.
The visitors' confidence was strong and they doubled their lead in 13th minute when Yoshinori Muto headed in a cross from Pablo De Blasis.
Maximilian Philipp cut the deficit as he scored for Dortmund in the 16th minute.
It was a off day for the host as they could not find another goal, leading to celebrations by the Mainz players when the final whistle came to end the game.
BVB sits in third place in the standings with 55 points.
John Brooks watched from the bench as Wolfsburg will be playing for their Bundesliga survival following a 4-1 loss to RB Leipzig.
In the 2. Bundesliga, Julian Green started for Greuther Furth in their 2-2 tie with Duisburg.
Kevin Lankford started for Heidenheim in their 1-0 loss to Kaiserslautern.
Terrence Boyd came off the bench while McKinze Gaines was a spectator on the bench as Darmstadt boosted their survival chances with a 3-0 win over Jahn Regensburg.
Andrew Wooten came off the bench for Sandhausen in their 2-0 win over Nurnberg.
In the 3. Liga, Isiah Young came off the bench for Werder Bremen II in their 1-1 tie with Osnabruck.
Mario Rodriguez watched all the action from the bench as Sonnenhof Gro▀aspach settled for a 1-1 tie with Wurzburger Kickers.
