USMNT INVITES 30 TO JANUARY CAMP
KENYA BROWN - Tuesday, January 9, 2018
The US national team will have its first gathering in 2018 as 30 players have been called up for the annual January camp, US Soccer announced on Monday.

The camp, which starts on Wednesday, emphasizes youth as many of the regulars were not included on the roster this time around. Half of the players at the camp are uncapped while 21 of them are under 25 years old.

There should be a heated battle at the goalkeeper spot as Bill Hamid and Zack Steffen appear to be the frontrunners to claim the number one spot. Hamid, who has recently made the move to Denmark to play for Midtjylland, is the only European-based player among the 30 to be at the camp as the Danish Superliga season does not restart until February.

Steffen, 22, gets the call-up to the January camp after his brilliant displays during the recently concluded MLS season, most notably during the Columbus Crew's run to the Eastern Conference final.

A number of players will have a chance to impress during the camp, but those from FC Dallas such as midfielder Kellyn Acosta will have to wait as the team refused to release any of their players as they prepare for the start of the CONCACAF Champions League - the only team out of the five MLS participants in the competition to do so.

With no important games coming until the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2019, the camp will give the national team a chance to assess the development of the players for the future.

"We're excited about our 2018 January Camp roster. It's all about the future and opportunity. We clearly feel that we want to have a look at these players that have the chance to be a part of the National Team for a number of years to come. It's a long journey forward, but this is the first step starting in 2018 for the program and for these players to now get experience at this level," said interim US national team coach Dave Sarachan in a statement on the US Soccer website.

The camp will come to a close on January 28 when the US faces Bosnia and Herzegovina at the at StubHub Center in Carson, California.
