RECAP: AZ 0 - 1 AJAX
Aron Johannsson was denied a penalty for the second time in as many games as AZ fell to Ajax in the Dutch Cup semifinal round.
A slew of yellow cards and sending-offs contributed to an eventful affair between Aron Johannson's AZ and Ajax, but in the end the visitors prevailed as Johannsson's second failed penalty in less than a week sent AZ packing out of the Dutch Cup in the semi finals.
AZ had an opportunity to take the lead early, as Joel Veltman was assessed two yellow cards within a minute, the second resulting in a penalty kick which Johannsson took.
The American's attempt was stopped by Ajax keeper Kenneth Vermeer however, and the squads went into half time knotted in a goalless tie.
Mattias Johannsson was given his second yellow card in the 47th minute, and Ajax capitalized on the ensuing free kick. Lasse Schone's shot curled into the top corner to give Ajax the 1 - 0 lead.
Johannsson made way for Denni Advic in the 64th minute. Johannsson and the rest of the AZ attack created chances throughout, but Vermeer put in a stellar performance to push Ajax through to the finals.
AZ get back to Eredivisie play on Sunday when they travel to take on Cambuur.
