RECAP: MIDWEEK ENGLISH ACTION
It was a tough Boxing Day for Americans in the Premier League but Duane Holmes starred in Huddersfield Town's draw against Derby County in the Championship.
Everton 0-1 Sunderland
It was a disappointing day for Tim Howard and Everton, as the American ‘keeper was red carded in the first half and the Toffees went down to Jozy Altidore's Sunderland.
Howard started the match for Everton but was sent off in the 23rd minute after he tackled Ki Sung-Yueng in the box. Ki stepped up and buried the spot kick to give the Black Cats the eventual winner.
With the man advantage, Sunderland was able to keep the Toffees from finding the back of the net for the rest of the match.
Altidore did not start but came on for a cameo appearance in the 87th minute.
The Toffees stay at 5th place but they now trail 1st place Arsenal byt five points in a crowded top of the table. They take on Southampton on Sunday.
Sunderland notched their first win since the beginning of November. They are still at the bottom of the standings, however they are four points from safety and hope to carry some momentum from this victory.
The Black Cats take on Cardiff City on Saturday.
Aston Villa 0-1 Crystal Palace
Brad Guzan and Aston Villa went down to Crystal Palace in stunning fashion on Thursday.
Guzan went the distance and recorded six saves for Villa.
The game looked to end in a scoreless draw, however Dwight Gayle curled in the winner in stoppage time to beat Guzan and give Palace the shocking victory.
Guzan kept Villa in the game by saving Barry Bannan's shot in the second half, but his team was unable to find the back of the net throughout the match.
Villa has now lost four straight games and has only scored one goal in that span. They look to turn things around on Saturday against Swansea City.
Newcastle United 5-1 Stoke City
Geoff Cameron and Stoke City fell to Newcastle United in rough outing for the Potters.
Cameron played the full ninety minutes while Maurice Edu and Brek Shea did not feature.
The match started positive for Stoke as Oussama Assaidi rocketed a shot from long distance in the 29th minute.
However, red cards to Glenn Whelan and Marc Wilson for Sotke in a span of three minutes put Newcastle in the driver's seat for the rest of the match.
Loic Remy notched a brace, while Yoan Gouffran, Yohan Cabaye, and Papiss Demba Cisse found the back of the net as well for Newcastle.
The Potters stay at 10th place and take on Tottenham this weekend.
Leicester City 1-0 Reading
Danny Williams and Reading fell to Leicester City in Championship action.
Williams went the distance for Reading, while Zak Whitbread did not dress for Leicester.
The only goal of the game came in the 21st minute after Anthony Knockaert was taken down in the box. David Nugent stepped up and buried the ensuing penalty kick to give Leicester the eventual game winner.
The victory puts Leicester City at the top of the Championship standings. They take on Bolton on Sunday.
Reading is now in 8th place but just one point form a playoff position. They take on Middlesbrough on Sunday and hope to break their two game losing skid.
Barnsley 0-1 Bolton Wanderers
Tim Ream and Bolton notched a road victory on Thursday against Barnsley.
Ream went the distance for Bolton, while Stuart Holden did not dress as he is still out with a long-term knee injury.
The only goal came in the 2nd half as Neil Danns curled in the winner for Bolton in the 64th minute.
Bolton is in 17th place and 8 points above the relegation zone. They take on Leicester City on Sunday.
Nottingham Forest 2-0 Queens Park Rangers
Eric Lichaj and Nottingham Forest beat Queens Park Rangers at home in Championship play.
Lichaj went the distance for Forest, while Oguchi Onyewu did not dress for QPR.
The first goal of the game came in the 29th minute when Greg Halford headed home, while Andy Reid supplied the second goal for Forest in the 80th minute.
Forest had managed two straight draws before this match, so the three points helps them keep pace with the rest of the playoff hopefuls in the Championship.
They take on Leeds United on Sunday.
Huddersfield Town 1-1 Derby County
Duane Holmes starred in Huddersfield Town's come from behind draw against Derby County.
Holmes came on in the 58th minute for Jonathan Hogg.
The first goal of the game came in the 30th minute as Craig Bryson found the back of the net dor County.
Town struggled to get in the match, however Holmes came on in the 2nd half and immediately put the home team's offense back on track.
Eventually the young American's energy paid off as he sent a through ball to Martin Patterson who leveled the game in the 86th minute.
Huddersfield is in 14th place and take on Yeovil Town on Sunday.
Brad Friedel did not feature in Tottenham's draw with West Bromwich Albion.
Cody Cropper did not make the bench in Southampton's win over Cardiff City.
Seb Hines did not dress in Middlesbrough's big win over Burnley.
Jonathan Spector and Will Packwood did not feature in Birmingham City's draw with Wigan Athletic.
Jon Paul Pittman did not dress in Wycombe's loss to Newport County.
