RECAP: COVA 0 - 0 (3-4) GIL VICENTE
A heroic performance from Caleb Patterson-Sewell ensured Gil Vicente progressed in the Portuguese Cup after a hard fought matchup with Cova de Piedade ended in a penalty shootout.
Cova de Piedade 0-0 (3-4 PKs) Gil Vicente
Patterson-Sewell has spent the majority of the season backing up Adriano, as the Brazilian has backstopped Gil Vicente to a surprising fourth place in the league.
But the former New York Red Bull ‘keeper has played consistently in cup games and his most recent performance will give coach Joao de Deus something to consider when choosing his lineups going forward.
Gil Vicente entered the game as significant favorites against the third division team from Almada, just across the river from Lisbon. But they were lucky to escape with a win as the hosts were superior throughout.
The score remained 0-0 at the end of regulation with both Patterson-Sewell and Cova de Piedade's goalie, Joao Marreiros, making multiple impressive stops.
Gil Vicente's chances in overtime were limited due to two expulsions, Avto in the 90th minute and Vitor Vinha in the 113th. But Patterson-Sewell stood up to everything Cova de Piedade could throw at him.
An excellent save in the 107th minute on Marcio Dieb was followed by an even more impressive double save in the 117th on Chiquinho and Dieb, again.
The Australian-American's heroics were not yet finished when the whistle blew to end the extra 30 minutes.
Paulinho, Halisson, Eder and Leandro Pimenta scored Gil Vicente's first four spot kicks, while Patterson-Sewell stopped the first and fifth penalties that he saw, sending the visitors home with a 4-3 shootout win.
