BRIAN SCIARETTA - Thursday, January 31, 2013
After extended negotiations, American winger Brek Shea has finalized his transfer to Stoke City after he won his U.K. work permit appeal.
"The work permit was approved," Shea's agent Richard Motzkin told YA on Thursday just hours before the close of the January transfer window.
Shea, 22, is coming off a down year in 2012 that ended with foot surgery in November. The Texas native only recently resumed training. When MLS and Stoke agreed to a price, Shea traveled to England for a physical exam which he passed yesterday.
Shea has been a part of every US youth national team dating back to the U-17 level and has been capped 15 times by the full national team. The talented left winger will now hope to return to full fitness in the second half of the Premier League season.
Stoke currently sit in 10th place in the Premier League with 30 points through 24 games. The addition of Shea will be a welcome boost to a struggling offense that has scored just 24 goals on the season.
