Oguchi Onyewu scored the game tying goal in extra time and Málaga earned a draw at Eibar on Tuesday night in Copa del Rey action.
Eibar took the lead in the 74th minute when Jose Maria Añibarro snuck behind the Malaga defense and volleyed a free kick past a stunned Carlos Kameni. The hosts looked to be in line for an upset win and clamped down defensively.
However, Onyewu proved an unlikely hero for Málaga when he headed in a free kick in the 93rd minute to get the draw and an all-important away goal. Onyewu headed the ball from just inside the 18 yard box in traffic; he rose above two defenders and past the Eibar keeper, who came out in an attempt to intercept the long ball into the box. The American defender also picked up a yellow card in the 14th minute for a hard challenge.
The Anchovies needed away goals in the last round of the Copa del Rey, squeaking by a feisty and determined Cacereño club. The second leg of the quarterfinal matchup with Eibar will be January 8 at La Rosaleda
