NICK LEYDEN - Sunday, December 9, 2012
Only one American was in action in Portugal over the weekend with Steven Silva Rodrigues putting in a full shift as Leixoes earned a point on the road in the second flight.
FC Penafiel 1-1 Leixoes SC
Leixoes moved to 11th place with an exciting tie against fellow northerners Penafiel.
The hosts controlled the majority of the game but Leixoes took a lead in the 79th minute with a penalty kick. Goncalo Graca had been taken down in the box and 18-year old Ugandan international Kizito Luwagga tallied from the spot.
Rodrigues and the rest of the visitors' backline had done well to keep Penafiel at bay despite being under pressure for much of the game, but four minutes into stoppage the referee awarded the hosts a golden opportunity by blowing for another penalty.
Midfielder Sergio Organista converted the penalty with nearly the final kick of the game, ensuring the points would be shared.
Leixoes will next take the field against Vitória Guimarães B next Sunday.
Tony Taylor and Caleb Patterson-Sewell both watched from their respective benches as Estoril climbed to fifth place with a 3-0 win over Vitoria Setubal.
Sergio Duarte did not dress for Nacional in their 2-0 loss to Maritimo, ending a brief two-game winning streak.
