Oguchi Onyewu and Málaga survived a scare from upset-minded Cacereño on Tuesday, using away goals to see the third division squad off and make the round of 16 in the Copa del Rey.
Onyewu went the full 90 minutes for Málaga, starting in place of Martin DeMichelis. Althouigh Cacereño won the match 1-0, allowing four away goals to Málaga proved to be too much. Winger Chapi scored the only goal of the match when he put in a loose ball from three yards out following a free kick in the 37th minute.
The second half saw a frenzied attack from Cacereño and some tense moments for Málaga. In the waning moments, DeMichelis, who replaced Weligton in the 47th minute, deflected a ball that nearly went into his own net, but inched just past the post. About a minute later, Málaga backup goalkeeper Carlos Kameni pushed a Cacereño shot just wide and into the side netting.
Cacereño also had a goal disallowed in the 94th minute when a headed effort was ruled offside following corner kick. The Málaga crowd breathed a collective sigh of relief, sparing them an embarrassing loss to a third tier club.
Their next match in Copa del Rey action will be on December 19, facing the winner of the rescheduled Athletic Bilbao and Eibar match. The game was rescheduled due to Athetic's cancelled trip to Israel in Europa League group play, which postponed the second leg of their Copa del Rey matchup as well.
The Anchovies next visit seventh place Getafe in Madrid on Saturday in La Liga play.
