DAVID SMITH - Sunday, September 30, 2012
Jozy Altidore notched up a goal and assist for AZ as they rescued a point in their wild high-scoring home draw with RKC Waalwijk.
AZ Alkmaar 3 - 3 RKC Waalwijk
Yet another fine performance by Altidore saw the striker further solidify his place atop the Eredivisie scoring charts with an early goal and a late game-saving assist against struggling Waalwijk.
AZ were in the lead after five minutes after Adam Maher skillfully created space on the left edge of the six-yard box, then sent a cross in front of goal fro Viktor Elm to head powerfully into the net, however it was canceled out 11 minutes later as Teddy Chevalier tracked down a long ball and hit his far-post shot just out of Esteban Alvarado's reach.
Altidore looked the seasoned pro when he picked up the ball in the midfield in the 24th minute, lost a trio of defenders on his storming run forward, and hit a low perfectly placed shot to the lower left corner for the 2-1 lead.
This only lasted three minutes, with Frank van Mosselveld putting away an initially blocked free kick by Rodney Sneijder in the 27th minute, then the visitors grabbed the lead two minutes after the break with Henrico Drost blasting a header in off of a corner by Sander Duits.
AZ pushed everything forward to salvage the draw, and had one last moment of elation when Altidore headed down a cross from the right flank into the path of Adam Maher for an eight-yard strike from the right side of the area to the lower far corner.
AZ do unfortunately drop into tenth despite the draw, and will have to be at their best when they visit league leaders Twente on Sunday.
Charles Kazlauskas will be in the starting lineup for Helmond on Monday evening as the red-hot Jupiler League leaders host FC Dordrecht.
