Tim Howard and Everton got the surprise victory over heavyweight Manchester United in Monday's Premier League opener for both teams.

Howard started, went the distance, and recorded three saves en route to his shutout.

Early in the second half, Everton came close to finding the back of the net, as Leon Osman's rocket shot from the penalty area hit the post.

Not long after, the Toffees finally opened the scoring when Marouane Fellaini headed in a Darron Gibson corner kick, setting Goodison Park into a frenzy.

Fellaini had been dangerous all night, hitting the post on one occasion in the first half, and was winning 50-50 balls throughout the night.

United's best chance of the night came in the 66th minute when Tom Cleverley latched on to a ball, that was not cleared by the Everton defense, and shot towards goal. Phil Jagielka though saved the ball off the line.

Gibson was given a yellow card for Everton, while Nani and Paul Scholes were booked for United.

The Toffees look to mirror this performance next week against Aston Villa, while Manchester United hope to grab their first three points of the season against Fulham at Old Trafford.
