RECAP: BRØNDBY IF 2 - 1 SILKEBORG IF
PREVIEWS
EXTRA TIME
DAVID SMITH - Monday, July 30, 2012
Clarence Goodson and Brøndby earned their first points of the season on Monday evening, with a pair of early goals and a bit of luck sending them to a much-needed win over Silkeborg IF.

Goodson captained the team from his role as central defender, putting in his normal 90-minute shift while picking up his second yellow card of the season.

Both teams were coming off of losses in their previous outings and eager to turn around their fortunes, but it was Brøndby that took the initiative from the opening whistle and surged to a perhaps lucky lead.

Barely more than six minutes after the opening whistle, Michael Krohn-Dehli hit Franck Semou on the right flank in open space with a well-placed pass from near the midfield stripe. The 19 year-old midfielder immediately picked out Simon Makienok with a low cross to the middle, however Silkeborg defender Simon Jakobsen attempted to clear the ball from danger, and mistakenly deflected the ball into his own net to hand Brøndby the lead.

Continuing to pile on the pressure, they added a second goal three minutes later. A corner from Mike Jensen from the left was met by the head of the leaping Simon Makienok at the near post, who perfectly placed his shot to the right side of goal for the 2-0.

Silkeborg did recover to put a lid on the proceedings before any further damage could be inflicted, and pulled one back three minutes before the half-hour when Marvin Pourie connected on a low corner from the right side and emphatically slammed it home to cut the lead to a single goal.

An error from Goodson nearly opened the door for the visitors in the 39th minute, when his attempt the clear the ball from Pourie's foot in the right edge of the area ended in a deserved penalty call, however Christian Holst's spot kick was brilliantly saved at the right post by keeper Michael Tørnes.

13 minutes into the second half, Brøndby had their own penalty shout waived off by the keeper, after it appeared that Dennis Flinta had felled Jens Larsen in the area, however the referee disagreed, instead showing the Brøndby player yellow for what he perceived to be a poor acting job.

Silkeborg's final push in the closing minutes did create some nervous moments, but was ultimately staved off by the resolute Brøndby defense, with the hosts finally celebrating their first win of the new season at the closing whistle.

Brøndby climb out of the league's cellar with the win, their three points enough for a ninth-place standing. They will next take the field on Sunday evening, when they visit AGF Aarhus.

Goodson's pk was 50-50 at best but the card was deserved since he almost killed something 50 yards away in the stand after the poor call. Surprised you didn't mention Larsen (Brondby) being taken down for a clear PK & red card that the ref missed and actually gave Larsen a yellow for diving. Rough match for the zebra in the center.
