Carlos Bocanegras prematch pledge to the fans went begging as Rangers fell to Kilmarnock at home.

Maruice Edu started and went the distance for the Gers while Alejandro Bedoya was not in uniform.

The loss goes down as Rangers first home loss of the season, ending a terrible week that saw the club enter administration under the ownership of Craig Whyte.

Bocanegra earlier this week vowed to give the fans something to cheer about, a promise that was not kept.

The lone goal of the game came just 12 minutes after the opening whistle after a defensive error from Rangers let Kilmarnock through on goal. Dorian Goian slipped at the crucial moment, allowing Dean Shiels to let his shot loose that slipped past Allan McGregor.

Bocanegra had the opportunity to come good on his promise after getting a firm header on Sone Aluko's corner kick but the American defender could not divert his header under the bar.

Rangers' problems were compounded before half time as Sasa Papac was sent off with a straight red card for a high challenge on Liam Kelly.

With the ten-point deduction as a result of their financial predicament now in effect, Rangers find themselves just six points ahead of third-place Motherwell, who have one game in hand. Bocanegra and Co. will next hit the road to face Inverness on Sunday.
