DONOVAN WITHDRAWS FROM US ROSTER
RECAPS
EXTRA TIME
BRIAN SCIARETTA - Monday, November 7, 2011
US Soccer announced on Monday night that forward/midfielder Landon Donovan has withdrawn from the US national team roster for the upcoming friendlies against France and Slovenia.

US Soccer also added that no replacement for Donovan was going to be added to the roster at this time.

Donovan has missed the three previous US games against Ecuador, Honduras, and Belgium. His last international appearance was against Costa Rica in California back in September.

Donovan is missing the upcoming friendlies to focus on the MLS Cup. After winning the Supporters Shield for the best regular season, the Galaxy qualified for the MLS Cup final after a 3-0 win over Real Salt Late on Sunday.

Everybody relax. He's got a league final to play. Disappointing, but nothing more than that.

Klinsmann would not miss an FA Cup final as a player just to play for Germany against France or anybody else in a friendly.

Donovan must focus on his club first. Klinsmann has to develop a team that can play well together and not be dependent on the skills of one or two players.

If you read Klinsi's statement from US Soccer, it does not sound like he is overly happy. He used key phrases like "this important match", "my preference", and "I respect his decision".

LD is 29 so his fitness for the WC should not be considered a given. JK needs to use this as an opportunity to build a team that can still compete if LD's skills decline sooner than expected.

It's expected, as this is a friendly, and a player's primary responsibility is with the club that pays the bills, but it sucks, nonetheless.

It's very tough for Jurgen to get a true idea of how these individual parts make the machine work without the presence of Landon Donovan.... Landon is instrumental is controlling the pace of the match, and his distribution is paramount to the US attack... I was really hoping to possibly see a midfield with Bradley at holding mid, Brek Shea and Danny Williams on the wing, and Landon linking up with a striking partership of Dempsey and Altidore....

It's just impossible to gauge the roles of players like Williams and Shea without having Landon in the starting eleven...

Oh well. What can ya do.
