It was a good weekend for American keepers in the English Premier League as Tim Howard and Brad Friedel were both winners.

Fulham 1-3 Everton

Clint Dempsey picked up an assist for Fulham but the London club suffered a home defeat to Everton after they allowed two late goals.

Dempsey started and played a full 90 for Fulham and Tim Howard played the whole game in goal for Everton.

Everton opened the scoring in the third minute when Royston Drenthe took a pass from Jack Rodwell and hit a beautiful left footed curling shot past Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer.

In the 67th minute Fulham would equalize through Costa Rican international Bryan Ruiz. On the play Ruiz took a pass from Dempsey inside the penalty box to chip it past Howard to even the score at 1-1.

Fulham should have taken the lead in the 89th minute when Bobby Zamora moved past Howard and had the ball with an open net in front of him from just a few yards out. Instead of tapping it in, Zamora smashed it over the goal and cost his team an opportunity to take a late lead.

One minute later Everton's Luis Saha made Fulham pay for their missed opportunity when controlled a pass off his chest and fired a shot past Schwarzer to give the visitors a 2-1 lead.

Rodwell sealed the win for Everton in injury time when he collected a poor Fulham clearance and sent a another shot by Schwarzer to finish the scoring at 3-1.

Fulham return to action next Sunday when they visit Wigan Athletic.

Everton host Chelsea this Wednesday in a League Cup match and they return to Premier League action next Saturday when they host Manchester United.

Blackburn Rovers 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham returned to their winning ways on Sunday as Rafael van der Vaart scored both goals en route to a 2-1 away win over Blackburn Rovers.

The ageless Brad Friedel went the distance for Tottenham in goal.

Van der Vaart opened the scoring in the 15th minute when he took a pass from Kyle Walker on the right side and finished from 12 yards on a side-footed shot.

Blackburn evened the score at 1-1 when Morten Gamst Pedersen took a free kick that was headed on by Christopher Samba. The ball found Mauro Formica who quickly fired it past Friedel from 16 yards.

Van Der Vaart found the eventual winner in the 53rd minute when he fired a swerving shot from 20 yards past Rovers keeper Paul Robinson to give Tottenham a 2-1 lead.

The win lifted Tottenham into fifth place in the Premier League and they next face Queens Park Rangers at home on Sunday.

Tranmere 2-1 Walsall

Anton Peterlin went the distance in his second straight start for Walsall however he was unable to help his club obtain a result against Tranmere in League One action.

Tranmere opened the scoring in the 59th minute when Robbie Weir scored from long range to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Walsall equalized the score at 1-1 in the 73rd minute when Andy Butler headed home a cross from Jamie Patterson.

Tranmere founded the winner in the 80th minute when Mustafa Tiryaki scored from close range to give the hosts a 2-1 lead. .

Walsall return to League One action on Tuesday when they host Exeter City.


Conor Doyle did not get off the bench for Derby County in their 2-0 loss to Middlesborough

Birmingham City's Jonathan Spector did not play for the second straight game in the club's 2-0 win over Bristol City.

Robbie Findley was in the 18 for Nottingham Forest but received no playing time for Notthingham Forest in their 2-1 win over Blackpool.

Frank Simek is still out injured and did not take part in Carlisle United's 4-0 defeat to Charlton.

John Paul Pittman did not dress for Crawley Town's 5-2 away win over AFC Wimbledon.

Jemal Johnson was not part of Southend United's 4-1 win over Torquay United.
